Legislative Update

December 2023
Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As we reflect on the blessings we enjoy this holiday season, I am thankful to have the confidence of the people of the 1st Senate District to continue my work at the State Capitol and get results for my constituents - whether it’s helping cut through red tape with state agencies, or passing needed changes in state law.

My priority continues to be how I can best serve you, by working across party lines to pass common sense reforms that strengthen our families and communities: clean water, keeping violent criminals off the streets, making health care affordable, protecting the most vulnerable among us, supporting our first responders, and honoring the commitments we made to our veterans.

I feel very fortunate to represent such a beautiful area with great neighbors throughout our District.  Together, we will continue moving Wisconsin forward in 2024.

Merry Christmas!
Grounding Porch Pirates this Holiday Season
In the midst of the Christmas shopping season, we need to be ever more mindful of porch pirates stealing packages from our front step, and retail thieves swiping merchandise from mom and pop shops. These Grinches try to steal Christmas, making prices higher for all of us.  Unfortunately, Wisconsin has one of the highest thresholds for felony theft in the country, meaning criminals can steal more stuff, before facing stiffer consequences.  The Door County Daily News this week reported that nearly half of Americans, 44 percent, have had a package stolen at some point, including 17 percent in the past three months alone, according to Security.org.

That's why I recently introduced legislation to crack down on porch pirates and allow prosecutors to combine the value of retail thefts over six months and across county lines and charge accordingly.  It also toughens penalties for thefts that risk significant bodily harm to others.  We need to take action to deter these criminals now and protect our ability to shop and go about our daily lives without the threat of violence.
Progress on Potawatomi Tower Repairs
I'm happy to report that the Potawatomi State Park Observation Tower is getting closer to re-opening!  I recently visited the Tower to see for myself the progress being made on the repairs pushed by myself and Rep. Joel Kitchens last spring, when the Governor finally yielded to our request to direct an initial $500,000 in emergency funding to stabilize the Tower, as provided by state law.  In addition, we secured another $500,000 in the 2023-25 state budget last summer for the second phase of this restoration project.  I’m very happy that we were able to move the Evers administration so that future generations will be able to enjoy and appreciate this beloved historic structure.
In the Classroom
It was great to speak with the students recently in Mr. Hamp’s US Government and Politics class at West De Pere High School. Thank you for the invitation and excellent questions!
In the News
Congratulations, Eagle Scouts!
I was honored to speak at the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremonies last weekend recognizing three outstanding young men who will continue to do great things in the community: John Sleeman, Henry Daul, and Isaac Kaster. I was surprised to learn that several of the scouts in attendance remembered when I came to speak to them during a blizzard at a church in Green Bay about 7 years ago- when they were much shorter!
