As time permits, I am able to take on some repair and restoration work, and some of the instruments I work on are quite unique. This guitar has been around the world and was even used in a concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina by its owner, Jim Bosse in a thousand person concert hall along with the Buenos Aries Philharmonic Orchestra.  Jim Bosse (b. 1949) is a guitarist/composer living in Cañon City, Colorado. He has performed over 400 concerts in North and South America! With that amount of use, you can imagine that it really needed to be worked on.

The work included fixing back and top cracks, removing  and replacing a clear golpeador/tap plate, some pretty serious work on the bridge and saddle to lower the action and a complete refinish. The owner was pleased with the restoration and is now back out on the road with the guitar.
Repair and restoration work requires a different skill set than building an instrument. For the last couple of years Greg Maxwell of Dogwood Guitars and I have been documenting everything that has come across our benches. We have created two courses on the Lutherie Academy website about Setup, and Repair and Restoration. Banjos, lutes, resonators, mandolins, and guitars are all worked on and the skill set includes everything from a simple setup to full restorations.
Here are some pics of a restoration I did on a 1969 Manuel Rodriguez classical guitar. It came in unplayable and is going out able to make music again. See the video below for more info about this restoration.
Below is also video of a recent repair I did on a 1937 Martin OO-18H. Hint: The H stands for Hawaiian. I have also included one on a popular Brazilian instrument called a viola caipira.  There are many other FREE videos of instruments I have repaired on the Lutherie Academy video page.
