Tēnā tātou katoa

What a year e te whānau! Firstly, I want to thank all our Te Atiawa whānau who have connected, reconnected, and joined us at various kaupapa throughout the year. Your presence and active participation have been invaluable to the growth of our iwi.

I want to acknowledge, celebrate and highlight the successful events we hosted this year, which include our Puanga Kaumatua Ball, ngā kiriata tamariki i roto i te reo Māori, our inter-iwi whānau fun day at the Waitara Pools that included our nothern whanaunga, the rangatahi wānanga, opening of Ko Tamawahine, the signing of the mounga Te Rūruku Pūtakerongo, Taranaki Tū Mai, and ongoing events such as Te Riri me te Raukura and Te Rā o Tā Māui Pomare. These events have not only brought us together but have also strengthened our bonds and enriched our collective experiences. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead as we continue to deliver Te Atatū - our strategic plan in the coming year.

Wishing you all a relaxing and whānau-filled holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

Meri Pōhūtukawa me ngā mihi o te tau hōu!

TE KOTAHITANGA AGM

Our Te Kotahitanga AGM was held at Owae Marae in the first weekend of Hakihea.

We welcomed over one hundred Te Atiawa uri and whānau to provide an update on our activities for the 2023 financial year (to 30 June 2023). The AGM was also a time for whānau to ask questions, seek clarification and discuss the ventures and plans of Te Kotahitanga.

The hui was followed by a beautiful performance by our Waitara East and Manukorihi Intermediate kapa haka rōpu (Te Kāhui o ngā Māta Raukura and Te Kura Takawaenga o Manukorihi) and a delicious Christmas lunch.

Ngā mihi nui to the whānau who attended our AGM in person or online, as well as to all who ensured this kaupapa could take place.

HOME SWEET HOME

Earlier this month, Te Kotahitanga was once again delighted to see two whānau move into their own whare. Many gathered in the early morning to attend the whare taki karakia, and support our whānau as they were gifted the keys to their new homes in Kohanga Moa - Inglewood.

Te Kotahitanga refurbished the properties and Ka Uruora worked with whānau to prepare them for ownership of the homes. This means six properties previously owned by Te Kotahitanga, have been refurbished and are now occupied through the Ka Uruora programme. We look forward to seeing more Taranaki uri complete the Ka Uruora programme and pursue their journey towards homeownership in the coming year.

NGĀ MIHI JORDAN BERRY

Yesterday we were honoured to receive a wheku from Jordan Berry (Te Atiawa, Ngāruahine, Ngāti Ruanui, Tapuika) who is a 2022 and 2023 Education Grant recipient. Last year he completed Toi Maruata - Certificate in Māori and Indigenous Art (Level 4) and this year continued to complete Toi Paematua -  Diploma in Māori and Indigenous Art (Level 5).

"I want to thank you (Te Kotahitanga) for the awhi and support of the educational grants given to me for the last two years studying my new passion whakairo."

"This wheku is a small gift to show my appreciation for your help. I carved this for my studies in 2022, it is a part of three wheku, the other two were given to other kaupapa that have also supported me while on my whakairo journey."

Congratulations on your tohu Jordan. Your wheku will be proudly displayed in our Te Kotahitanga office for all to enjoy.
