Happy Hmong New Year

MN Hmong New Year returns to the St. Paul RiverCentre as the 43rd MN Hmong New Year Celebration during the thanksgiving weekend.

Saint Paul is home to the country’s largest Hmong population.  The Hmong New Year Celebration brings the Hmong community together from far and near to join the new year festivities as well as showcasing the UNITY among diverse Hmong clans.  Hmong dress in traditional clothing and enjoy Hmong traditional foods, dance, music, ball-tossings, and other forms of entertainment.  One of our AMA Youth Leaders - Nancy Thor (Stage Name: NewSONG), has been featured as the new generation of Hmong-American female artist and performed during the New Year.

There was over 32,000 strong whom attended the weekend celebration.  This event has truly transformed from just a Hmong cultural event to a part of Minnesota's culture.

Wellness Week at the Hmong College Prep Academy

A Fall 2023 wellness week was held at the Hmong College Prep Academy for 9th grade students. The wellness week is centered around teaching youth important topics to inform and empower them to make positive and healthy choices. This is in hopes of influencing their future and their community’s quality of life and well-being. This week was hosted by Asian Media Access, Encouraging Leaders, Neighborhood HealthSource, Prairie Seed Academy, and Tobacco-Free Alliance MN. Each day was represented by one of the hosts and presented topics included bicultural healthy living, domestic violence, gun violence prevention, mental health, and smoking prevention.

To help the youth retain and reflect on the topics, each class period at the end of the week plays a Kahoot game. Kahoot is a quiz game that can help show how quickly and accurately the youth can recognize the key takeaways of the presentation.

Spirit of collaboration and equity drives the Saint Paul tech scene

As industries evolve, organizations require more tech talent to keep up with the dynamics of rapid change. Twin Cities business leaders know community solutions are required to move the Minnesota tech economy and workforce forward, and Saint Paul, in particular, is brimming with those solutions. One such example of these solutions is Bridgemakers’ Tech Entrepreneur Fellowship.

This fellowship, in partnership with Saint Paul Full Stack, is designed for young tech-focused entrepreneurs (ages 18-25), prioritizing youth from low-income backgrounds, youth of color, or youth otherwise facing the most adversity. The fellowship runs for six months, during which young people participate in an immersive program to develop their business and leadership skills and gain access to mentorship, a stipend of $1,200 per month for living expenses, and $5,000 for the development of their businesses.

Read Full Stack’s full article on the initial six-month cohort, here, and look for opportunities to join the second cohort of tech entrepreneurs in 2024.
