JANUARY 2024
The research is pretty overwhelming in terms of the benefits of high school students being involved in a high school sport or activity. Students who are involved are more likely to graduate, more likely to go to college, more likely to have better grades, less likely to get into trouble and less likely to suffer from depression. Our primary mission as an organization is to encourage and support every single student who wants to be a part of something at Reservoir.

Make one of your New Year's resolutions to become more involved this year! Become a Boosters member, volunteer on the Boosters Board, sign up to sell concessions or spirit wear at a home game, make a tax-deductible family sponsorship donation of as little as $100, and start the year off right by joining us for our first monthly meeting of the year tonightMonday, January 8th at 7pm in the staff lounge next to the cafeteria. Visit our website to view the full meeting schedule, sign up to volunteer and to see positions that are still open.

Reservoir Girls Varsity Basketball - Senior Gabi Burian

Gabi has played on the girls varsity basketball team since her freshman year. She missed her freshman year due to Covid but has been a captain and a starter since her sophomore year. She is the "glue" that holds us together, demonstrating leadership, unselfish play, and an incredible fitness level and work ethic. She is currently our 3rd leading scorer and rebounder, as well as one of our top defenders.

Gabi has a 4.52 GPA, is in NHS, Spanish NHS, and the RHS Scholars Leadership Group. She is very focused on preparing to be a physical therapist for a Division 1 athletic program, or possibly a professional team. She is deciding on colleges and has thus far been accepted into Kentucky, Temple, and Louisville.

Reservoir Speech and Debate Team HUGE Success - at Home!

On the weekend of December 16-17, 2023 Reservoir's Speech and Debate Team hosted an amazing tournament, with 21 participating schools, 250 competitors, and more than 100 coaches and judges present. The home field advantage was certainly in evidence—we won more medals at this event than we have at any other single tournament in our history!

Congratulations from the season so far go to:

Janie Sung & Ellie Um - Gold in JV Public Forum Debate
Ellie Um - Gold Speaker in Public Forum Debate
Janie Sung - Bronze Speaker in JV Public Forum Debate
Priya Giri & Amanda Wang - Silver in Varsity Public Forum Debate
Jeremy Wong & Xavier Bialczak - Bronze in Varsity Public Forum Debate
Zoe Brock - Gold in JV Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Anastasia Cullum - Silver in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Maneet Mehta - Bronze in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Best Presiding Officer in Student Congress,Bronze in Student Congress
Sean Kim - Bronze in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Amanda Wickstrom - Silver in Student Congress
Neil Chibber & Riley Jackson - Gold in Duo Interpretation of Literature (with a perfect score!)
Becca Sokolowky - Silver in Children's Literature
Larry Djatang - Silver in Extemporaneous Speaking
Camille Martin - Gold in Impromptu Speaking (with a perfect score!)
Nikhil Narayanan - Gold in Impromptu Speaking (also with a perfect score!)

This season, in total, we've earned 21 Gold Medals or equivalents, 14 Silver Medals or equivalents, and 9 Bronze Medals or equivalents! We also maintained our now two-year long streak of capturing every JVLD gold medal at each tournament in which we compete. Those who did not medal still did very well—there were a lot of just-off-the-podium finishes! I also want to extend my congratulations to some new National Speech and Debate Association Honor Society Inductees:

Conan Chung
Elshaday Fasil
Fatou Savage
Hyoin Yoon
Zoe Brock
Zoey Comer

All of our students invested tremendous effort in their performances, and we are proud of everyone who competed. Public speaking is hard, and I admire the dedication and courage all of our students show when they compete!

I also want to extend a few thank-you's. First, to our amazing custodians, without whom this event would not be possible. We are enormously grateful for everything they did to facilitate this event, and we cannot thank them enough. Second, to our Administration, who supported our efforts to host this event, many of whom stopped by on Saturday to encourage our students in-person. Finally, to Boosters and our amazing parent volunteers, who really made this day a success and who kept us all fed and hydrated. Your work was greatly appreciated!

This was a day of enormous joy and pride for the team, and we are excited to move forward with new topics and tournaments in the next calendar year as our season continues.

~ Brian Shouse, RHS Speech and Debate Coach/Advisor
