Dear AVID Newsletter,

In the relentless struggle against immigration detention's foreboding landscape, AVID is undergoing transformative changes. Firstly, let's extend a warm welcome to Sui Lau (Alla), our new Communication Coordinator, whose expertise shines through in crafting this insightful edition. Alla has been a valuable part of our team for the past four months, enhancing our communication channels. As we combat the urgency of detention expansion amid a surging human rights crisis, it's evident - this government persistently introduces cruel bills to maintain power, demonizing those seeking safety. We stand firm against the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill—a direct contradiction to the rule of law.

Amidst these political tumult, AVID evolves structurally as Gee Manoharan steps into the role of Co-Director, further fortifying our commitment to lived-experience leadership. This newsletter is thoughtfully segmented into AVID updates, Member spotlight, policy insights, and calls to action. Read below for crucial perspectives on the Rwanda Supreme Court ruling, our creative responses, the Illegal Migration Act, a poignant reflection on a tragic death in detention, and more.

Journey Journal by AVID

Dear King Charles:
From our margins to Your Majesty

Thirty people with lived experience in detention wrote King Charles a letter this summer to congratulate him on his coronation. Untangling the historical threads, the letter exposes the racialized and postcolonial nature of UK immigration detention.

Of course, we didn't hear back from him. So, we went to the Madame Tussauds to present the letter and say 'Happy Birthday' to him with a few beautiful gifts…
