Art to Change the World (ACW)  is a diverse non-profit coalition of change makers employing the arts in service of positive social change.
Message from the Director
$1,000 Club A Peek Behind the Curtain:

Is the term “paid volunteer” an oxymoron? If yes, it would be an apt description of the ACW model. We are a collective and many people contribute to our success -- pure volunteers, staff who are paid small stipends (paid volunteers), private donors and grant funding.  This is the time of year where everyone feels pinched while we wait to hear if we won any grants. This is the time of year I have to ask people for money.  I loathe this part of my job. People don’t like people who ask them for money. Sigh….

The American Rescue Plan money is no longer available and the current atmosphere at funding agencies is very competitive.  We are having NO problems finding programming money (see below) but I am determined not to go back to expecting the artist/leaders in ACW to work for nothing. Currently, we need $9,000.00 of operational money to get us to June 31 without reducing monthly stipends to over 10 people.
I was sharing with Owen Brown that while waiting for news on grant requests,  it would reduce my personal stress considerably if I could get $9,000 in the bank.

Then I can spend the winter focusing on finding us recurring corporate funding for operations as we go forward.  He declared, “I will give you $1,000 towards that need.  Why don’t you start a $1,000 Club?”  What an idea! I am thrilled to share that the following people have joined Owen in the $1,000 Club:  Dave Dvorak, Lucy Schroepfer, Lynn Olson, Layl McDill, Pat Rogers, Kelly Frankenberg, and Barbara Bridges. The donor benefit will be a solar powered river cruise next summer with Captain Corey Parkos who helped us with our Mississippi River Pearl project.   https://mplswatertaxi.com/

Join me in thanking these generous ACW members.

Do you have any suggestions for a corporate entity who might be interested in the work ACW does and might understand that contributing members deserve to be compensated for their contribution? We pay artists!

By Kelly Frankenberg

Thanks to those who came to party with us creatives on November 19th at Solar Arts!
Our Holiday Art Showcase this year was another successful event. We launched 3 new projects and programs, had art displayed in the Fox Den and listened to 3 musicians play!
Making snowflake name tags, eating, drinking, swapping, critiquing, and buying art made for a truly artsy experience.

Specifically, we launched Lin’s project, SWAP + Barter, where we had listings up for trade or money. You can still list items for sale or trade or services to barter in our newsletter. See the project page:
https://www.arttochangetheworld.org/swap-and-barter/

We also launched Critique Cabaret, Bronwyn’s project of a critique for artists of all kinds. We critiqued paintings, illustrations, 3D and a poem. This Cabaret will continue every other month throughout the year. Please visit the project page https://www.arttochangetheworld.org/critique-cabaret/  to see the next date, time, and location! Come to get feedback or give feedback or both!

Finally, we launched Sadie’s Trash to Treasure ACW Kiosk. Art made out of recycled objects that can be sold at festivals or retail places. We are receiving applications on an ongoing basis. See more about it here

Musicians played while we partied! Dave Dvorak, our musician coordinator, played and brought in his other talented friends to perform, Sammie Jean Cohen and Vicki Dischler. See more of Dave’s music here:

Critique Cabaret

By Bronwyn Simmons

Critique Cabaret’s launch was met with success and warmth this past November 19th. Many people came to share their art, and they received so much love and appreciation for their works, but the crowd was also full of ideas and constructive criticisms for the creatives to take home.
Poetry, paintings, books, multimedia pieces! They were all a part of this grand cabaret that will be coming to us again in the next few months. Thank you to everyone who participated and keep an eye out for updates!  Contact me with your interest. Bronwyn Simmon

The next Critique is on February 1, 2024, at Solar Arts.

DECEMBER GALLERY SHOW Homewood Studios

AMBER VISIONS: An Exploration of Warmth, Resilience, and Healing
Curated by Amanda Rose              December 2—30, 2023
Opening Reception - Saturday, December 2nd from 2 pm to 4 pm

For the past two years, Amanda Rose, Gallery Assistant at Homewood Studios, has installed shows, climbed ladders to fix lights and install lettering, been a greeter at receptions, and an all-around support for events in the gallery.  During these same two years Amanda, attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, to earn an MFA degree.   She has since garnered teaching positions at MCAD and St. Catherine University in St Paul.  In celebration of her time spent at Homewood Studios, we offered Amanda her own show in December, which she has curated and managed.
AMBER VISIONS highlights emerging artists and provides space for them to share their unique perspectives. Priority was given to artists based in the Twin Cities, aiming to highlight work that inspires hope. The exhibition is colorful, uplifting, and innovative. Many of the featured works reject social barriers, such as gender-based oppression and racial discrimination.

Trash to Treasure Collection
By Sadie Ward

In November we had the opportunity to roll out our Trash to Treasure Collection.

This is a collective of artists that have a sustainable element in their creative practice. This project was designed to be portable so items could be brought to events and sold at a manageable price point. We are accepting artist applications on an ongoing basis.

Please contact Sadie Ward if you have an event coming up and would like to table the Trash to Treasure kiosk or have a retail partner who would be interested in partnering with Art to Change the World to spread awareness on sustainable art.  Read more:

Art to Change the World’s Maker Space Project is Partnering  with Emma Norton Services

Approximately twenty local artists will be selected by a jury process to create new or sell existing artwork for the Emma Norton Restoring Waters Call for Artists project. Each artist will have the opportunity to create or sell up to four artworks. Emma Norton Services provides transformational housing and growth for women and families on their journey of recovery. Restoring Waters will provide supportive housing to individuals and small families who have often experienced homelessness and trauma, and who have a mental health diagnosis, chemical dependency and/or other chronic health condition or disability.  Read More:
https://emmanorton.org. Best efforts will be taken to offer these opportunities to at least 50% BIPOC/LGBTQIA and other under-represented artists.
Emma Norton Services will purchase approximately 80 medium size works @ $300 each (predominantly 2-D and hanging sculptures). Restoring Waters is being built through a trauma-informed lens and Emma Norton is seeking artwork that will promote healing and empowerment, while also helping residents feel safe and supported.  The works will belong to the new Restoring Waters residents for their new apartments. There may also be opportunities to create or sell larger works for common spaces. In addition to creating artwork for residents, another objective is to create community among the residents and staff of Emma Norton and the ACW artists for further collaboration in the new space. You do not need to be an ACW member to apply. Help with applications provided. Applications will be reviewed by a diverse jury.
Basics:  Two parts to our project.
1. High-quality, professionally presented artworks created. Applications manager, Layl McDill, has offered to help with framing and application prep.

2. (Optional) Artists have the opportunity to help create and supply an art room and commit to teaching ONE 2-hour class in each two-month cycle of weekly art classes. $200 stipend. Training Provided.

Applications open on Dec 1.
Find the Application Here: https://www.arttochangetheworld.org/restoring-waters/ Due  January 15, 2024. If you need help completing the application or would prefer to do it in hard copy- please contact Layl Mc Dill layl@claysquared.com.

"Barter Bulletin Volume 2 - December 2023
by Lin Boemer

Happy Holidays from the SWAP + Barter Team! Thank you to all of the wonderful ACW Members who attended and participated in SWAP + BArter's launch event on November 19th! We had great success in trying out the concept, speaking in-person with those who are interested in getting involved, and, of course, SWAPping with others! WE can't wait to continue to build this budding community!
Are you interested in having your goods, services, commission requests, calls for art, or other postings featured in the January Barter Bulletin? Fill out the Barter Bulletin Submission Form by scanning the QR Code or at the following Link:
https://forms.gle/JDzBSaygY7Gmm3mu7. Looking to get more involved with "SWAP + Barter"? Check out our Project Page at https://www.arttochangetheworld.org/swap-and-barter/ or Contact Project Manager Lin Boemer at LinsLameLifeArt@gmail.com."

"A Letter from the Barterer-
Hello everyone! If you haven't met me before, my name is Lin and I am the ACW intern that has been working on recreating SWAP for the past several months. At the recent new members event, we launched our program "SWAP and Barter," through an in-person trading opportunity. I am happy to report that the event was a success! We had many new and old ACW members visit our booth, and there was a ton of interest expressed in SWAP moving forward. A few in-person barters took place, and the reports I have received show high satisfaction from those who participated in a SWAP! As we look to the future, I will continue to be working on the "SWAP + Barter: Barter Bulletin" (as seen in this very newsletter) as we work towards designing an online marketplace for SWAP to live in more permanently on the ACW Website.

So how can you get involved? Well, as I mentioned before, I will be posting the "SWAP + Barter: Barter Bulletin" every month in the ACW Newsletter over the winter. Are you interested in having your goods, services, commission requests, calls for art, or other postings featured in the Barter Bulletin over the winter season? You can fill out the Barter Bulletin Submission Form at the following Link:
https://forms.gle/JDzBSaygY7Gmm3mu7. We most likely will not have any in-person events for the next few months (as we all try to stay warm and out of the snow), but you can look forward to some sort of SWAP event in the Spring!
If you are looking for more information about "SWAP + Barter," check out our Project Page at
https://www.arttochangetheworld.org/swap-and-barter/ And always, feel free to contact me, the Project Manager, Lin Boemer at LinsLameLifeArt@gmail.com with any questions, concerns, comments, or inquiries on how to best serve that ACW community with this new project!
Thank you all for attending the November 19th Event! - Lin"

Call for Musicians, Dancers and Performers for This Project!

The 1st Annual Echoes of Tradition Workshop and Performance (Echoes) is a remarkable collaboration of local history, live music & dance - a captivating intercultural journey celebrating a harmonious fusion of several of the following:  Hmong, Somali, Jazz, Latin, Modern, Native American or Hip Hop dance and music intertwined to create an unforgettable cultural past and present Twin Cities experience. Echoes is an opportunity for creatives (all art disciplines) from all ages, cultures and abilities to share what connects us as Minnesotans.
Primary Performance Event Fall 2024

On Performance night, there will be 11 works presented.  Five works, one each, from the: Hmong, Somali, Jazz, Latin, Modern, Native American or Hip Hop dance or music genres. Three works from the Workshop participants and three cross-cultural collaborative works developed by the 8 creatives and project leaders will also be presented.  Works will focus on the Twin Cities historical theme.
We also plan to have other audience engagement activities going on during performance night.  For example, two visual artists will be on easels on each side of the stage painting their reactions to the performance. We are also considering an easel where members of the audience might rotate on the 11 works and express their reaction. Perhaps we might auction these works at the end of the night. Audience percussion activities are planned.  Throughout the event, special speakers will be sharing short antidotes and leading interactive discussions about the presented works and the historical roots of the music and dance in the Twin Cities
Echoes also includes a full day educational workshop which invites established and emerging artists to bring a work in progress and, with the input from professionals in their discipline, earn an invitation to join the Echoes of Tradition Performance.

Stipends commensurate with funding .
Possible Dates:
Call for Participants by April 1, 2024. Selection by May 1, 2024
Workshop June 2024

Taking Risks - On Being An Artist
Lynnette Black, ACW Member

Being an artist is to risk being impractical, to be judged, to jump into the unknown, to be free. The full human experience. That's why I am an artist. I can enter an alternative universe (in my mind), energize my spirit, and escape my fearful emotions and endless ruminating. I can be free.

Lynnette Black has her intaglio “Rhapsody” on display in the cooperative members' exhibition at Highpoint Center for Printmaking.

Art Speaks: Patience and Art

Art WILL change the world and it starts with US! “Art Speaks” is written by Kelly Frankenberg and represents her personal viewpoint, not the policies of ACW. For more info about Kelly and her art, go to
http://www.kellyfrankenberg.com

I can't help but notice "kids these days" don't have the patience for most things. And you can see that translates into art creation.

Growing up in the 80s and before that, kids sat quietly in church for an hour, had to watch whatever channel was on the family TV, wait for the commercials, wait a week for the next episode. We drew, colored in coloring books, and wrote by hand on paper.

Today kids watch on demand on their own device, choosing from almost an infinite amount of things to watch. They don't know how to sit still for an hour or even five whole minutes. The movie isn't entertaining to them unless it moves quickly and has action. They create on tablets or use A.I. to make art.
So the patience collected and taught to the older generation is not coming through to the younger generation or their art creations. No one wants to make the drawing by hand anymore. The concept sketch is generated or made with a computer's help. The painting details are done digitally. Why wait for paint to dry when another form can be used? There are time saving techniques in all forms of art to get you to the next exciting step, because, not only do we feel we don't have any time, we really don't have any patience in the creation stage anymore. What does that mean for future art?

Shout Out to Lucy Schroepfer who helped organize the GTMD this year.
I am pleased to report you all supported ACW with $1700.00.

ACW is an artist-led organization.  ACW paid artists over $107,000.00 in the last two years.  If we do not pay artists, there will be no artists. Thanks for helping keep up the good social justice work.  Did you miss GTMD? Just click here!

Inspired by Claudette & Rosa

by Laura Mann-Hill

I hope everyone is taking care and getting some rest this weekend. I wanted to share that the play I wrote, “Inspired by Claudette & Rosa” is being performed at South High School! The shows are December 7th , 8th and 9th at 7pm at South High Theatre 3131 19th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55407
It was directed by the amazing. Siddeeqah Shabazz and I got a chance to meet the cast a few weeks ago! They are extremely excited to perform and share it with the community and performances are open to the public!
15-year old Sonia and some of her high school classmates struggle navigating issues of race in their everyday life. After learning about Civil Rights Activists Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin, Sonia is inspired to take a stand in her own life.
Just wanted to let you know if you wanted to try and catch it I plan to attend on December 9th at 7 pm. You can get tickets at the door and it’s a suggested donation of $5-15. It would be fun to see some folx if you’re available but I know it’s a busy time of year.
Big love to you all!   Peace and Blessings.
