Spring has been very busy for the staff, guests and volunteers at the EMC.
On Thursday 19 October, during Anti-Poverty Week, we hosted Canberra Homeless Connect.
There were stalls and representatives from over 30 local community and government organisations, ranging from Centrelink and pet care, to clothing and alcohol and drug counselling and haircuts.
The weather was perfect so the Plaza was busy as well with a BBQ organised by Helping ACT, with food provided by CHC, and other food provided by Vinnies Night Patrol.
The event was opened by ACT Deputy Chief Minister, Yvette Berry. Minister for Homelessness, Rebecca Vassarotti, and Elizabeth Lee, ACT Leader of the Opposition, also spoke. About 150 guests enjoyed access to many services all in one place. Haircuts were a particular favourite.
In the lead-up to Canberra Homeless Connect, ABC breakfast radio 666 conducted a series of interviews over two weeks with some key EMC supporters, including two of our youngest, known as Miss Seven and Mr Nine (click here to listen), and a volunteer, Nicholas Villiers. Mohammed Ali from Helping ACT often speaks on 666 and is another great supporter of the EMC.
It’s very encouraging to see the continuing support - both financial and in-kind - that the EMC receives from many local businesses, service groups, faith groups and generous individuals.
