An oil well has been burning and spilling in Awoye for more than 3 years. The flame is relentless, harming marine ecosystems, disrupting community life and compounding the climate crisis. We have been rallying everyone to take action to quench this fire. Sign the petition and find out what else we've been up to in this edition of your newsletter.

Hello there,

Welcome to December. Here’s how we were healing territories in the last month.

Activities

The celebration continues

On Nov 2, Nnimmo Bassey was conferred with an Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Fellowship at the ANA 42nd International Convention in Abuja, Nigeria. He was inducted into the prestigious Council of ANA Fellows for his proven contributions to the development of Nigerian literature and for his positive and quantitative impacts at the ANA!

Building Resilience and People's Power

On 8-9 Nov, we held the last session of our School of Ecology for 2023. This edition questioned the corporate impunity in our communities and established interlinks for building synergies for collective action. We critically analysed the EIA, and centred conversations about the well-being and livelihoods of communities and peoples.
Commemorating Ken Saro-Wiwa

Nnimmo Bassey spoke at the 11th Annual Ken Saro-Wiwa webinar hosted by Maynooth University Library on Nov 10. Organized to commemorate his death, the webinar highlighted his contribution to global struggles for environmental justice and human rights. Nnimmo Bassey spoke on climate politics.

Pesticides threaten human rights

On Nov 7, we held a training for legal practitioners and CSOs on Pesticide Hazards and Human Rights. The event highlighted key data and incidences of pesticide poisoning; examined the prospects of litigation as a means to enforce workers’ and consumers’ rights; and identified necessary actions required for an improvement of the regulation of pesticides in our agricultural sector. Read the communique here.

Practical agroecology training

We teamed up with GMO-Free Nigeria Alliance for practical agroecology trainings in Uyo Afaha Nkan, Akwa Ibom and K-Dere, Rivers State on Nov 21 and 23 respectively. The trainings equipped farmers and CSOs with knowledge of the dangers of GMOs, production of organic pesticides and fertilizers, agroforestry and biodiversity improvement.

COP28: What’s in it for the Niger Delta?

COP28 has begun and the people of the Niger Delta must unite and project their voices in the conversations that are ongoing  in Dubai. To this effect, Nnimmo Bassey spoke in a webinar that brought together communities, CSOs and activists to voice a common call and agenda ahead for COP 28.

Media and Publications

New study on Nigerian indigenous foods

Our most recent study is on indigenous foods and consumers' attitudes toward them. We highlight the available and diverse indigenous foods across Nigeria's geopolitical zones and emphasise their importance as well as current threats to local food systems. We also make recommendations on how to preserve our food heritage. Grab a free copy here.

Ororo Inferno

Ororo-1 Well has been burning for 3 years! Ororo Inferno, our latest documentary, tells the story of neglect and exploitation of people and resources that have remained a staple in many communities in Nigeria.
