4 tips for safe online shopping

U of T Information Security has some advice to help you have a safe and happy holiday:
  • Before making any online payments, ensure a secure connection by verifying that the website's URL begins with "https://" and has a padlock symbol in the address bar.
  • Don’t click on links in unsolicited emails or pop-up ads; instead, directly access the retailer's website by typing the URL into your browser.
  • Enhance transaction security by using a secure personal network instead of public Wi-Fi, as public networks are less secure.
  • Use a password manager to store the passwords for all your accounts, because passwords are the first line of defence against online threats. Learn more

Announcements
Shelley Hawrychuk, UTM’s chief librarian, who began a 10-month leave on March 1, 2023, has indicated that she will retire as of Dec. 31, 2023.
Hawrychuk has supported this UTM community as a leader at our Library for almost 30 years, including as chief librarian for the past six-and-a-half.
During her time here, Hawrychuk led UTM’s implementation of one of Canada’s first academic models of library liaison service, where librarians work directly with faculty and departments in their area of expertise.
The model opened new pathways to support the quality of learning at UTM, a theme that runs throughout UTM’s Strategic Framework: the importance of broad collaboration in translating research discovery into student learning and success.
Hawrychuk managed special collections throughout her UTM career, working with her team to expand many collections significantly, including through acquisitions of the Al-Waez Abualy Alibhai Collection of rare Ismaili manuscripts, the papers of the United Fruit Company, and the Syd Bolton Game Collection.
