Arizona’s Mega-Dairies and the Water Crisis
|
|
You are looking at thousands upon thousands of calf hutches, baking in an Arizona heat wave this summer. In each hutch is a calf who will become a dairy cow, or veal. We Animals Media photojournalist Ram Daya visited industrial farms in Arizona to document the staggering scale of operations, both from the sky and ground. This new work shows us that Arizona's growth in industrial farming has had a huge impact on their already stressed water supply.

Despite the number of turkeys slaughtered for Thanksgiving in America (an estimated 46 million in 2022), most consumers know very little about these intelligent birds and what their lives are like before reaching the table.
If you’re looking for delicious plant-based dishes for the table for any of your upcoming holidays, our friends at Farm Sanctuary have some tried-and-true recipes for you!

Photo: Jo-Anne photographed this despondent fox during an investigation at a fur farm in Quebec. The fox had chewed off parts of her tail and leg, and her only shelter, the nesting box, was closed off. This investigation led to a criminal cruelty conviction by the Montreal SPCA, a first of its kind against a fur farm. Canada’s new ag-gag bill criminalizes this documentation instead of the welfare conditions on farms. Jo-Anne McArthur / We Animals Media

On November 29, Canada’s House of Commons passed Bill C-275, a federal ag-gag bill that will criminalize the work of animal photojournalists, activists and whistleblowers exposing animal abuse on farms.
The results of this vote are disheartening - for the animals, the state of photojournalism in our country and the Canadian public.
In Canada, we have a frightfully long way to go in giving animals even the most basic of protections. The censoring of photojournalists and whistleblowers only further sweeps Canada’s systemic abuse issues under the rug.
But we’re not giving up. Far from it. Read our public statement on Canada’s Bill C-275.

It’s just after midnight at a factory farm in South Jutland, Denmark, and 170 pigs are being loaded onto a lorry. The animals are beginning a two-day journey that will take them halfway around the world, starting with an overland trip down to the German border before travelling the length of the country and exiting into Luxembourg. Next stop: Cambodia.
Startling new evidence about the EU's role in the "long distance" trade of farm animals has come to light.

A We Animals book (there are four to choose from!) makes a remarkable holiday gift. Not for everyone, of course; these are serious books of unflinching photography and writing. But for those who love photography, animals, or thought-provoking historic works, these books can become a cherished artifact.
