Paid Undergraduate Positions at the D-Lab

D-Lab is hiring students for our Undergraduate Technician position! We need you if: you are service- and detail-oriented; you are a student who is interested in helping students; you like to be asked questions and look for answers. The UTech role serves as a first point of contact for the wider campus community for accessing D-Lab services which support data, data science, workshops, consulting, and research.

Required: 

  • Must be an enrolled UC Berkeley undergraduate student for the Fall 2023 semester.
  • Must be able to commit for at least 2 full semesters (e.g. Spring 2024 and Fall 2024).
  • Ability to work on-site at the D-Lab in the Social Sciences Building.
  • Available Work-Study Funding is REQUIRED.

Digital Humanities Working Group
Hosted by D-Lab & UC Berkeley Library

The UC Berkeley Digital Humanities Working Group is a research community founded to facilitate interdisciplinary conversations in the digital humanities and cultural analytics. Our gatherings are participant driven and provide a place for sharing research ideas (including brainstorming new ideas and receiving feedback from others), learning about the intersection of computational methods and humanistic inquiry, and connecting with others working in this space at Berkeley. We encourage everyone to participate, regardless of your experience level. The DH Working Group is a welcoming and supportive community for all things digital humanities.

Tracking Urban Expansion Through Satellite Imagery

Among its many uses, remote sensing can prove especially useful to document changes and trends from eras or settings, where traditional sources are either inexistent or infrequently collected. This is the case when one wants to study urban expansion in sub-Saharan countries over the past 20 years. To further remedy the lack of data on land cover uses from earlier time periods, classification methods can be used as well. Using easily accessible satellite imagery from Google Earth Engine, I provide here an example combining remote sensing with classification to detect changes in the land cover in Nigeria since 2000 due to urban expansion.

Digital Health Humanities Program Coordinator
UCSF Digital Health Humanities Pilot Program

UCSF Archives and Special Collections is thrilled to announce that the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has generously awarded the UCSF Digital Health Humanities program with a grant to host the Advancing Digital Health Humanities Institute (ADHHI).

The Digital Health Humanities (DHH) Program Coordinator will manage the development and day-to-day operations and services of the recently established Digital Health Humanities (DHH) program, including project direction for the two-year NEH-funded Advancing Digital Health Humanities Institute. The goal of the Digital Health Humanities program is to guide and equip researchers in their engagement with digital tools and methods to facilitate interdisciplinary scholarship that will advance understanding of the profound effects of illness and disease on patients, health professionals, and the social worlds in which they live and work.

Healthcare Data Management Specialist
Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI)

California’s Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) is hiring a Data Management Specialist! This position supports the HCAI, Data Management Group’s most technically complex operational, analytical, and administrative processes associated with Enterprise Data Warehouse and enterprise information management activities, evaluation of program performance and supporting enterprise applications for data management. It also serves as the Healthcare Data Management specialist performing analysis, planning, and implementation across Extract/Transform/Load tools; Master Data Management tools, database administration tools, data and information management tools; and business intelligence analysis and reporting tools.

This is a full-time position based in Sacramento County.

Healthcare Payments Data Research Scientist
Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI)

California’s Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) is hiring a Data Research Scientist! This position designs, conducts, analyzes, draws conclusions, and serves as a team leader on scientific research studies of moderate scope and complexity. This involves making independent, difficult scientific decisions using statistical methods, established guidelines and technical scientific procedures. Under general direction, and with work reviewed periodically to assure that it meets the assignment’s objectives, this position is a member of the Healthcare Analytics Branch team and serves as a team lead on producing public reports in line with the aims and priorities of the Healthcare Payments Data Program for the Cost and Quality Analysis Group within the Analytics and Data Section.

This is a full-time position based in Sacramento County.

Postdoc Positions in Higher Education Technology
UC Berkeley School of Education

Applications are open for several two-year full-time Postdoctoral Associates at the UC Berkeley School of Education, focusing on projects relating to technology innovation in systems of higher education. The postdoc associates will work closely with a multidisciplinary research team led by Professor Zach Pardos studying policy, credit loss, artificial intelligence, and factors influencing human-computer interaction in higher education contexts.

Any applicant holding a PhD with relevant experience is welcome to apply. Applicants with strengths in one of the following areas are highly encouraged: 1) UI/UX, 2) Machine learning, and 3) Higher Education administration scholarship. Annual compensation ranges from $60,000 to $70,000 with flexible start dates. These positions are funded by the Foundation for California Community Colleges, Ascendium, and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

UC Computing Scholars Coordinator
UC Santa Cruz Baskin School of Engineering

The UC Computing Scholars Coordinator is a seasoned professional who supports students in the UC Computing Scholars program. The Coordinator assists in the transition of computing students from the community college to universities. The Coordinator travels to community college partners to provide advice and assistance regarding transfer and the UC Computing Scholars program. The incumbent develops, implements, tracks, assesses, and reports on the program.

Under the general direction of the UC Computing Scholars Principal Investigator and direct supervision of one of the EOP Assistant Directors, the UC Computing Scholars Coordinator provides direct services to computing students with programs to support the academic success, retention and graduation of student. Annual compensation ranges from $61,700 to $85,000.

CRB Nexus is a community of practice for policy staff and researchers across California to initiate and build relationships, share policy needs and solutions, and find ways to move those ideas into action to benefit all Californians.
