December 28, 2023 huge waves on the Sonoma Coast
A man enjoys the views of the foamy waves at Furlong Gulch.  Early morning, swells seemed to have averaged about 25', with huge waves pounding the shore around Salmon Creek and at the mouth of the Russian River/Goat Rock, completely changing the appearance of the beach.  Photos by Stewards Staff.
Photos above: Waves slam into the Sonoma Coast (left) as sea foam overtakes the beach at the mouth of the Russian River (right).  Below: Seen is the Russian River at Goat Rock, with a barely visible beach, and its concrete jetty completely exposed. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to all of our amazing staff and volunteers at Stewards, the generous donors who support our organization, and our partners at California State Parks. As we come to the end of 2023, we wanted to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to the extended community that makes our work possible. As we look ahead to 2024, we’re filled with excitement and hope for what the new year will bring. We know that with your continued support and commitment, we can make an even greater impact and continue to make positive change in the world. So here’s to a wonderful end to 2023 and a bright and prosperous 2024. Thank you again for all that you do – we couldn't do it without you!

Gratefully yours,

Justin Lindenberg

Mushroom, fungi and other wild finds along the Waterfall Trail!
Bring your camera and walk the Waterfall Trail at Armstrong Redwoods! This is a short, easy walk from the picnic area. Once out of your car, look for the footbridge. Cross over, veer left walking past the picnic tables (you will see the creek to your left), and you'll be on the trail in no time. The incline to the waterfall is very gentle, and the waterfall is only about a 7 minute walk from the bridge on a recently redeveloped trail. We would love to see what you find! Send your photos to stewards@stewardscr.org and we will happily share them on our Facebook page with thousands of followers!

Recording your hours and Bear in Mind Training while being an employee or volunteer
Recording volunteer hours and completing Bear in Mind training: Volunteers can reach out to Amelia Schall (amelia.schall@parks.ca.gov) directly to report their volunteer time, and for help in accessing the Bear in Mind training.

Bear in Mind Training: As a California State Park volunteer, you represent the park whenever you are serving.  Because of this, it is important that you are aware of the standards to which you should expect to be treated as well as the expectations of how you are to treat others while you are serving.  To aid in this, all long-term California State Park volunteers over 18 are now required to take the department’s Bear in Mind, Equal Opportunity Employment (EEO) training every two years.

There are three ways to complete this training. This five minute video shows how to do it on the Better Impact database: Accessing Bear in Mind Training for Volunteers in Better Impact - YouTube. Other options are reading through a pdf or printed copy of the workbook and submitting the completed quiz to me.

There is also this video created by HQ that shows how to log hours: How to Log Hours - YouTube
