Dear Reader,

Welcome to the final UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) newsletter of 2023.

The past year has been a decisive one for UIL. In close collaboration with many partners, we have achieved key milestones:
A robust follow-up process to the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII) to support countries in the implementation of the Marrakech Framework for Action through policy advice, capacity-building, and a solid monitoring framework to track progress in adult learning and education.
An effective coordination of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, which laid the foundation for strong actions by 292 member cities that are transforming lifelong learning into a tangible reality for over 310 million citizens. 
Transformative literacy actions on the ground. The Global Alliance for Literacy, for instance, is making a significant impact in Chad and the Kingdom of Morocco, and we have strongly contributed to advancing literacy in Afghanistan.
The launch of our UIL Learning Hub, a platform offering lifelong learning capacity-building for currently more than 1,500 key stakeholders. It is an expanding community where ideas meet action, where knowledge meets application. 

I wish to personally thank you for your continued engagement, interest, and support of UIL’s work in 2023!

As we approach the end of the year, so does my interim term as UIL Director. I am pleased to pass the torch to Ms Isabell Kempf, who will step into the role of Director in January 2024.
