Despite all the many challenges throughout the year, Mundus maris can look back on many achievements in the continuous drive for ocean literacy, ocean protection and support to men and women in small-scale fisheries. Partnerships were strengthened and we reached new publics with our activities. We are particularly happy that the group first testing the inclusive learning methods of the Small-Scale Fisheries Academy in Yoff, Senegal, is going ahead at their own pace towards collective solutions to the many challenges the sector faces. The women all along the coast are particularly harshly hit by industrial overfishing, diverting food fish into fishmeal, land grabbing for industrial infrastructure, lack of garbage collection and access to credit and essential social services. A network of women active in the postharvest sector – processing, marketing - struggling to make ends meet to feed the families, has asked us for training in applying these successful Academy methods more widely. They want to become the masters of their destiny and not be pushed around.
Give the gift of a donation as your last minute X-mas present to enable a scale-up of Mundus maris work in support of these women. Securing their livelihoods reduces the pressure towards irregular emigration. These hard-working women and their children deserve all the help they can get.
Happy to share one piece of good news already: All donations received until mid-January will be doubled by an anonymous donor. New or upgraded monthly donations will also be doubled throughout 2024. Will you give for these women?
