Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.
1 Peter 4:9 (English Standard Version)

Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
Romans 12:13 (ESV)

Do you enjoy having guests in your home? Do you like being a guest? I love both sides of hospitality. Now, I realize if you’re reading this anytime close to the time it reached your inbox, there’s a good chance, with Christmas ‘23 in the books…the last thing you want to think about is hospitality.

But, I can’t help myself…and you’ll know why when you meet my Mother…

meet

My momma…Peggy Blackard Popineau (91 years young🙂). She has a sister, my Aunt Norma, and they had three brothers. Mother was raised in Covina, California, where she continues to reside. To God be the glory…she is blessed with reasonably good health, a strong mind and a quick wit. Earlier this year my brother Phil and his wife Barbara moved in with her, a blessing to the whole family. Peace of mind is priceless.
With my parents six years ago in their dining room.
My mother birthed and raised my four brothers and me. She was deeply in love with my Dad (as were us kids) and by today’s standards would be compared to June Cleaver. She was a stay-at-home mom. She waited on my Dad to a fault 😉, maintained a clean home and loved us five kids so very well.

She taught us about Jesus and models what a disciple is. I am beyond blessed to have her for my mother. HOSPITALITY would be among her greatest gifts.

Fifty years ago my parents added a dining room to their home. For a half century my parents (my Dad passed in 2018) have hosted hundreds of guests in that dining room. Over delicious meals, sweet tea, hot coffee and cherry cream pie and many other menus, my mother extended hospitality.

At their dining room table, world problems were solved (so they said), stories told and retold, laughter ensued that to this day can cause a big smile just thinking of those evenings. Heavy hearts were prayed for, and even tears were shed at that table. Engagements were announced; birthdays and holidays were celebrated.  It was truly a meeting spot for kindred spirits. A place where Jesus was the unseen but ever-present guest.

Again, I'm aware that opening your home right now, in the aftermath of Christmas, isn’t perhaps at the forefront of your mind. But maybe…just maybe, we could each be more intentional with hospitality in this new year.

It’s not the menu…or your surroundings that will touch a guest’s heart…it’s YOU! Allowing Christ to shine through you and offering a cup of water, coffee or tea in His love can be exactly what that friend needs. And maybe just what you need.

Is there someone you could invite over in January?

thankful

I am so grateful that each of our four kids and their spouses are raising our grandchildren to love Jesus and His Word.

Even though Scripture memorization may be a bit harder as we get older, it's another beautiful HOSPITALITY OF THE HEART. As we enter the new year, my heart's desire is to commit more Bible verses to memory. With His help, we can do this!

Here’s a video from a year ago of our granddaughter, Penny. She has a memorizing trick that might help all of us. 🙂

Do you have any tips for memorizing Scripture that you could pass on?

heart

Jesus, please help us to have hearts of hospitality. And a zeal to share Your love with others. (Feel free to forward this email to a friend who might just need a nudge in following Jesus.)
