Aloha Friends,
Welcome to the New Year of 2024 and Aloha to 2023. If you're like me, you're looking back at what you've achieved and will use what's worked to build your world even better in 2024.
Do you know that this annual New Year's Letter is our most highly viewed edition of the year? I guess people like looking at good memories to recap the recent trip around the sun.
The Art Tip this time is, "Paint What You Want". I hope it inspires some of your future work.
Kaua'i Friends, I'm preparing a fun and historical presentation at Keoki's Paradise on Kaua'i on January 17th. This is an event that is special to me as I'll be sharing the times and people that have influenced my life as a wildlife artist. Please contact Keoki's and make your reservations to join me there.
The picture above is symbolic of the coming year as I'll be more involved with Honolulu Zoo, the place that held so many of my youthful memories. Woot Woot!
"Painting Roosters" is our featured Painting in Paradise TV Show.
For the first show of 2024 we'll feature Hawaii's Dragonflies which are symbolic of a fresh start.
There's a lot of Favorite Photos this month, including a re-cap of 2023. I'm looking forward to creating the future together.
With Thanks and Happy New Year from me,
.

ART TIP -
Paint What You Want
On a recent paddle to Mānana (Rabbit Island), I watched as four monk seals rested on its tiny beach. My mind drifted back to the days in my lifetime before there were any seals on this island. They may have been gone for a long time because in those days, the seals stayed almost always on the northwestern Hawaiian atolls now known as Papahānaumokuākea.
As a youth I dreamed of seeing a live monk seal. I wanted to be near one so badly but it seamed like I was asking to see a mermaid or something too rare to be true.
As a wildlife ranger on Kaua'i, I saw a trend start to happen as the seals began heading down the chain. First they started gathering on Ni'ihau (as Keith Robinson told me), then on Kaua'i, where the first seal born on that island in recorded history, was known as Hina.
In the years that followed, it was evident that seals were re-visiting beaches on the main islands that they had not hauled out on in many decades.
This painting of "Mānana Girl" was of the first seal born on Mānana Island. It was painted a year before she was actually born there and came across to O'ahu and rested under this tree.
This is one of several paintings that I've done in hopes that what I painted would someday come true. I share this as an example that You can paint what you'd like to have happen in Your lifetime. I'd love to see some of the art you paint to create the future you want.

Meet Bula Kaupe, Our Newest Team Member
Hawaii Web Solutions is owned a Maui Family Business owned and run by Bula Kaupe and his 'ohana. They are so good to work with and I highly recommend them for website building and maintenance. You'll be noticing some nice updates to our site in the coming weeks. Here they stopped at the 'Ohana Kanaloa mural at Whaler's Village.
PatrickChing.com was built by Josh Silva several years ago. I really like its unique look and I'm learning a lot about the process of maintaining the website from the folks who helped work on it including Josh, Joy, Thomas, Crissia, Kelly and Bula. Mahalo!
