The Ottawa Skateboard Association

2023 was a year to meet new volunteers, make new friends and welcome new skaters into the scene 🤘

Indoor sessions, clean-up events, bus rides, learn to skate, meetups and fundraising — a little of everything was done this year and we are very thrilled for the next chapter!

Here are some of the highlights of 2023:

JANUARY—APRIL

Free indoor skateboarding at Landsdowne Aberdeen Pavilion

As now customary, we had our second session at Aberdeen, which again was an outstanding success! Everyone came to enjoy a dry and safe space to skate during the winter months and we only have to thank all the volunteers and skaters that made it happen!

We're so happy with this project, we wrote a whole success story on our website.

APRIL

Board Drive and raffle at Beyond the Pale Brewery

We hosted a donation day at Beyond the Pale where we got plenty of used boards, trucks, wheels, and safety equipment. Full skateboards were assembled, donated to youth across Ottawa, and also used for our For Pivot's Sake skate lessons. We also had the coolest little raffle for anyone who donated equipment.

Mega thanks to Top of the World for donating plenty of new completes, as well as sponsoring some rad gifts for the winners!

Also big thanks to Szeto and Birling for also donating gifts to our raffle 🤜 🤛

Take a peek at how it went

MAY & JUNE

Charlie Bowins Park and Riverain Park cleanup

With the help of the community, we all got together to clean and beautify the skateparks we love so much in one of the most fun (err, labor intensive?) event of the year!

This year we doubled our efforts and worked on Charlie Bowins and Riverain

Big thanks to CitySeltzer for keeping everyone hydrated!

JULY-AUG | SEPT-OCT

Learn to Skate at Bayshore

Plenty of smiles, high fives and tornado warnings to go around during our Learn to Skate programming at Bayshore focused on kids ages 6-14.

The program was such a success we were able to extend it until the first days of winter (and even got to witness some first ollies from the participants!)

AUGUST

Skateboard Try It session with @ausomeottawa

16 participants joined us to experience skateboarding during August. We worked on fine motor skills, skateboard games, skateboard maintenance, and some free skate during a six-week program.

Huge thanks to the Ausome team for making this possible!

JULY

CNIB Ottawa Hub tries skateboarding

We had a cool session with the CNIB Foundation youth group, showing how fun and accessible skateboarding can be.

Riding with or without assistance, everyone faced new challenges and practiced fine motor skills. All while having an amazing time.

JULY

Wakefield Summa Slamma

One of the coolest events of the year in the beautiful town of Wakefield could not be completed without a free bus leaving downtown Ottawa and free skateboarding lessons — Both provided by us.

Check out the reel!

A big thanks to Birling, TOTW, Girls+ Raised by Wolves, Lettuce, City Seltzer, and Miam. Girls+ for the workshops and For Pivot's Sake for the lessons.

JULY

Girls+ YOLO bus trip to Akwesasne

The Akwesasne skatepark is only an hour away from downtown Ottawa and it's one of the coolest parks to go skate. The Girls+ organized the YOLO bus to join a full day of sweet activities at the park.

It was an all-inclusive event of music, free lessons for youth and adults, prizes, art, and a tie-dye workshop.

Thanks to @akwesasne_skatepark & @auntyskates!

JUNE

Girls+ Go skate day

The now classic Go Skate Day in Ottawa got some extra hands from Girls+ this year. Alongside Birling and Top of the World, Girls+ Skate 618 helped organize the contest, prizes and pizza!

SEPTEMBER

Ottawa Architecture Week meets skateboarding

As part of the Ottawa Architecture Week, OSA's member Chris Cormier gave a talk about the intersection between architecture and skateboarding.

How do skateboarders understand the built environment differently and use the materials, angles and spaces for play?

Big thanks to Sarah Fox, Lee-Christine Bushey, OAW and Chris Cormier for making this happen!

NOVEMBER

Playback fundraiser

The skateboarding community got together to celebrate some of the amazing skating in the city featured in Jake Borchenko + Birling's new video.

Apart from us helping organize the event, OSA also got a share of the sales, totalling $2000! This money will be used to maintain and repair the obstacles for the Aberdeen winter skate sessions.

Thank you everyone for coming!

NOVEMBER

Legacy expansion guidance

In a joint effort with the City of Ottawa, our Square Foot group helped gather information and considerations for enhancements to Legacy Park, which were presented to the city.

We made a push for lights, extending the street section, concrete resurfacing and perhaps adding a mini ramp. All budget-dependent.

We will keep you informed on the latest developments.

This was a hell of a year!

See you at Aberdeen!
