Tēnā tātou katoa,

We have an exciting new year just over the horizon!

Working Groups delivering great content now and into 2024:

Following on from our launches of the AI Governance website and XAI white paper in November, this month our LLM Working Group launched the prototype of our LLM ‘living’ white paper in a well-received webinar.

The XAI work is complete for now, but if you want to contribute to either AI Governance or LLM Working Groups, both will be continuing their work in 2024 – you can let us know here.

AI Strategy Reboot

A new Working Group will be starting in the new year. Chaired by Tom Maasland from MinterEllisonRuddWatts, its focus will be on creating and activating an AI Strategy for Aotearoa, working with industry, academia and the government, building on the good work already in place. If you would like to be directly involved in this Working Group let us know here.

Meta APAC Partner Innovation Symposium, Singapore

I was invited to a gathering of tech thought leaders from the APAC region to share stories, wisdom and progress. You can see the video here

There were some amazing use cases, but perhaps the most interesting take away for me was that we are all facing the same challenges when it comes to adoption – building trust – and where we have been using AI for the Environment (for example, our Hackathon Festivals), South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan have been using creative industries.

AI in Creative Industries

On that note, we have been working with WētāFX, WeCreate, Creative HQ, and a major television and radio organisation in the UK to bring this important global conversation about AI’s impact on creative industries to New Zealand.

Speakers already confirmed include: WētāFX, WeCreate (NZ’s creative industries NGO), Laura Ellis (Head of Technology Forecasting, BBC), Danijela Horak (Head of AI Research, BBC), Grimes with her manager Daouda, and the team from triniti.plus; and Cristobal Velenzuela (Runway) - Cristobel is an artist, technologist and entrepreneur. Watch: The Future of Content Creation and AI: Insights from Cristóbal Valenzuela.

AI for the Environment Hackathon Festival

With our foundation partners back on board and Prof Albert Bifet from The University of Waikato in the driving seat, our 2024 hackathon festival is in the diary. You can register your interest to support and/or participate here.

AI Summit 24 – save the date 11th September 2024

After a sell-out summit this year we have secured a bigger space in the Aotea Centre. If you would like to sponsor, participate or attend please register your interest here.

If you are after an interesting read over the holidays Wildlife.ai have been looking into the proposed biodiversity credit systems (BCS) - take a look here

Wishing you all a very happy time over the festive season.

Mere kirihimete.
