UNL's Office of Sustainability presents:

The Sustainability Scoop

UNL Prioritizes Research and Innovation in Sustainability

Throughout January and February, the Office of Sustainability focused on the Research and Innovation theme of UNL’s Environment, Sustainability, and Resilience Master Plan. This theme aims to establish UNL as a leader in the creation of new knowledge and solving real-world problems related to sustainability and resilient systems.

As an R1 institution, UNL is recognized for the very high level of research conducted by its faculty and students, much of which is focused on best practices for resilience in agriculture and sustainability. UNL reported in its last Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) submission that 34% of the departments that conduct research at UNL are engaged in research to promote sustainability. This commitment was integral to helping UNL achieve its recent Gold STARS rating. Prioritizing research and innovation in sustainability helps create solutions to mitigate climate change where possible, and adapt as needed.

UNL's Seven Grand Challenges Include Sustainability Themes
Did you know that UNL has identified seven Grand Challenge thematic areas in which to focus its expertise and resources? The Grand Challenges Initiative seeks to inspire the UNL community to imagine how research, scholarship, creative activity, and outreach intersect with the challenges and to find ways to work across disciplines to help solve the challenges. Climate Resilience and Sustainable Food and Water Security are two Grand Challenge thematic areas that directly relate to environment, sustainability, and resiliency topics and will further position the University as a leader in innovation.

A recipient of Grand Challenge grant funding is the Nebraska Community Action Research for Equity and Sustainability (NE CARES) Hub. This project incorporates the social dimension of sustainability by helping reduce inequity in Nebraska in education and health.

UNL Conserves Nebraska's Tallgrass Prairie Habitats

One of the ways UNL prioritizes sustainability-focused research is through stewardship of the Nine-Mile Prairie, which is located along the Northwest edge of the City of Lincoln. Research on this site began in the 1920s with the work of UNL Professor John E. Weaver

Nine-Mile Prairie:

  • Spans 230 acres
  • Is owned by the University of Nebraska Foundation and managed by UNL
  • Serves as the home for over 390 plant species and 80 bird species
  • Remains one of the largest intact tracts of tallgrass prairie in the Midwest

Nine-Mile Prairie was recently the subject of a short film directed by UNL alumnus Ethan Freese, which includes interviews that share perspectives from researchers, students, and Indigenous Americans.

You Can Make a Difference by Conserving Energy in Lab Spaces
Laboratories are the highest energy users on campus. Many laboratories are equipped with fume hoods, which are important for lab safety but consume very high amounts of energy. Follow these simple tips for reducing energy use when fume hoods are not being used and no lab chemicals are inside.
Save energy by putting Occupancy Switch in STOP mode whe the lab is not occupied, by putting the fume hood in STANDBY mode when it is not being used and no chemicals are inside, and closing the sash when you are not actively working in the fume hood

Cabela’s program amplifies student research, internship opportunities

The Undergraduate Creative Activities & Research Experiences Program (UCARE) provides opportunities for undergraduate students to gain paid research experience. This program enables students to build essential skills in research, including defining research interests, writing research proposals, and presenting research projects through the annual Student Research Days or the Summer Research Symposium. Recent student projects focused on sustainability include the work of Ella Humphrey who received funding from UCARE and Cabela’s Apprenticeship Research Program to support her research testing the tolerance of Bigmouth Shiners to climate change.

Husker researchers using metabolic model to study temperature stress on corn

A team of researchers at UNL led a study to assess the effects of extreme temperatures on corn production. This study, which is the largest ever conducted on corn production, focuses on how to maintain crop growth even under extremely high or low temperatures.
