Dear Friends,
November was a busy one and as Christmas is rapidly approaching, it's natural to reflect somewhat on the year that is coming to an end..

As it happens, our family celebrates Christmas. It's a somewhat "blended" version with elements of all the diverse cultures which make up our family background. Many of the readers of this Newsletter do not celebrate Christmas. We all come from different backgrounds and we reflect our family heritage. One thing I do believe though. The "Spirit of Christmas" is one that we can share with each other regardless of our personal beliefs.
The values of love, kindness, and generosity are universal. They know not color, religion, history, or nationality. They are the condition of humanity. And so..., I wish each of you the "Spirit of Christmas" as a reminder that we can all choose to be kinder, more compassionate, and more giving to those around us.
Let's get started.

December 5th marked the launch of a brand new series of "Day In The Life of A Neurosurgeon" videos. They will come in two "flavors". Some will be primarily intended for medical professionals in practice, or still in training. The other series will be targeted toward patients with a desire to better understand their condition, their treatment, and what to expect from their medical care.
There will be major overlaps. Since the establishment of Princeton Brain, Spine, and Sports Medicine (and before), I've been committed to the idea that sharing and teaching are key components of the art and science of medicine. The truth is that a well educated patient can gain understanding from viewing material that was prepared for a med student, and a med student can improve their skillset by better understanding the needs and concerns of the patient. Over time, we'll be addressing this in a series of videos that I hope you will find useful.
First up, is "Six Simple Steps For Assessing Any Patient". Designed for med students and healthcare pros, I demonstrate my own approach to an office visit with a patient. Med students will observe real interactions with real patients. If you're a patient, this is a great opportunity to understand what I'm trying to accomplish during your visit. You can also reflect on your experience with other doctors, and how you can help make the visit more effective.

After you watch, I urge you to consider subscribing to both my YouTube and my Instagram channels to insure that you're up to date on fresh releases.
In this video you'll meet a variety of patients with different conditions. My grateful thanks to the patients who understood the value of this project and who agreed to the presence of a camera. Thank You!!

During July of 2023 – a time of unbelievably strong wildfires in Canada, the highest global temperatures ever recorded, rains and flooding that killed people in the U.S., Japan, India, Turkey and China – I read a book that gave me real insights on climate change and humans’ essential role in creating the problems we’re now living through.
You may know the name but the odds are good that you don't know much about the remarkable insights of Alexander von Humboldt. The German scientist lived at the turn of the 18th Century and single-handedly developed much of our understanding of nature as a complex not interconnected force that does not exist for the sole benefit of humans. In fact, it was he who predicted many of the human causes of climate change. His thoughts influenced Jefferson, Darwin, and more.
Please have a look at my LinkedIN review of Andrea Wulf's important book about him. I provide some highlights of why this is a "must-read" book. After you've read the article please do consider following me on LinkedIN to stay up to date on new articles published there.

On November 1st, Centrastate published an article on their website about Rutgers Wrestling Coach Jordan Pagano overcoming possible paralysis.
Some of you remembered and reminded me that Coach Pagano had shared his personal story in a video found on YouTube and on my website. You can hear the story in Jordan's own words in this short in-person video. Jordan talks about his fears and concerns, and also shares his approach to the future. It's a terrific video from a terrific young man. Watch it here.

After you've watched, please consider subscribing to my YouTube channel and to Instagram. Never miss another video.
