Right to Dream

On our way to the Spirit Awards, Pedro and I missed our freeway exit. We ended up in the neighborhood where my family first moved in the US, passing by my bus stop in 7th grade. My younger undocumented self would’ve never imagined that 20 years ahead, I’d be on that very street again driving to an awards ceremony. Dreaming at the time felt unrealistic, due to my family’s immigration status. The world can be so unjust that even having an aspiration is not readily accessible for all of us.

As we drove on, I asked Pedro about his hopes for 2024. I was so delighted to hear him talk about his future plans, because as Pedro devastatingly admits in our film, he doesn’t like to think about the future. Perhaps, it’s easier to have dreams when people around us encourage us to pursue them. As someone told me once: “How will your dreams come true, if you don’t dream at all?”

It’s only January 16. If you haven’t already, give yourself permission to dream a dream today. Here’s “Dreamer” by our songwriter, Julie Yeeun Kim, to get the juices flowing.

The Roundup

  • unseen received an Independent Spirit Award in the Truer than Fiction category for emerging documentary filmmakers. Due to advocacy, we were able to overcome the citizenship restriction that originally made us ineligible for this award. We dedicate this award to our undocumented and disabled communities.

  • The Firelight Impact Campaign Fund has generously selected unseen as one of the seven projects in its current cohort. The program “resources audience engagement and impact campaigns led by filmmakers of color,” allowing us to further reach audiences with our film in 2024.

  • “A compelling portrait of a resilient individual pursuing a better life despite his situation, unseen aims to transcend sociopolitics with its narrative and instead focus on the humanity of its subject. And in more ways than one, the film pulls it off.” - The Movie Buff

Where to Watch (and Listen)

As we look back to 2023 with an award-winning festival run, we look forward to sharing unseen more widely with audiences in 2024. Screenings are now available with captions and audio descriptions in both Spanish and English. Full accessibility features of our film are listed on our website.

  • Mark your calendars: our US broadcast premiere airs on Monday, March 18, on the award-winning PBS documentary series, POV. Check your local listing.

  • Schools and organizations can now host their own screening of unseen through our educational distributor, GOOD DOCS. Discounts and waivers are available for low-income organizations and high schools.

Just when we all thought it was over, there’s more to come! Stay tuned for upcoming festival screenings of unseen in the coming weeks.

Hype Corner

Aside from these milestones of our film, we celebrate our collaborators and their achievements. Some highlights include:

  • The Art Works Podcast by the National Endowment for the Arts featured our producer Day Al-Mohamed and mentor James LeBrecht to discuss the work of FWD-Doc, an organization that advocates for filmmakers with disabilities.

  • MeVacunoPorque is a visually illustrated podcast by our co-producer Dorian Gomez Pestaña, featuring health workers and organizers in North Carolina, as they address vaccine equity and the lasting impact of COVID-19.

  • Berlinale Talents features our associate producer Ash Goh Hua with their latest film Full Month 满 in the Short Form Station. “For this year's Talents from 68 countries, the six days in Berlin will be their introduction to one of the world's most active film communities with almost 10,000 alumni on all continents.”

  • In 2015, Pedro and Set first met at a fellowship program, advocating to expand healthcare for undocumented immigrants in California, also known as Health4All. 9 years later, thanks to the work of organizers, California becomes the first state with health insurance for all low-income undocumented immigrants.

Rooting for you and your dreams,

Set, Pedro, and team UNSEEN
