Lake Cachuma Cruise Scheduled for

January 21st Cancelled

Unfortunately, the Third Time was not the

charm, and this cruise has been cancelled

due to a forecast of rain.

We will reschedule for next summer.

IMPORTANT:  the money you paid for the cruise will be converted to a donation to the SYVJC General Fund. If this is not what you want us to do, please let Shoshanah know, so she can advise the bookkeeper how to handle your payment. If you don’t advise Shoshanah about this by January 25th, the recatorization to a donation to the General Fund will be done automatically.

Join SYVJC as we Celebrate the Birthday of the Trees at our Tu B’Shevat Shabbat on January 27th

When you arrive between 4 and 4:30, be sure to enjoy the beautiful view from

our hosts’ home, then shmooze until sunset,

when we will gather for a Havdalah service,

followed by a potluck supper and

learning about the delightful holiday of Tu B’Shevat

The deadline to sign up for this service is January 24th

By clicking on her name, you will be able to communicate directly with Shoshanah who is taking reservations.  Tell her the full names of everyone in your group and what you plan to bring to the potluck. Please label anything you bring with gluten or any common allergens such as peanuts and other nuts, avocadoes, dairy etc.  And, of course, no pork or shellfish dishes.

The address and directions will be sent upon receipt of your RSVP.

We hope you will join us for this festive event

IMPORTANT: Why RSVP? Simply put, so our hosts know

many tables and chairs to set up. And if you find you cannot attend

after making a reservation, please let Shoshanah know that, also.

Also IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT hit reply,

as that will send your response to someone else.

Thank you!

Hanukkah Party on December 9th was a Fun, Musical Time

With delightful Klezmer music with some Sephardic tunes thrown in in for good measure by the band called Kalinka, delicious latkes donated by the Los Olivos and Wine Merchant Café made by their Jewish chef Brooke Stockwell, using her bubbe’s recipe and festive decorations throughout, the SYVJC Hanukkah Party was a delightful evening for some 42 guests, who danced, ate, and shmoozed all evening at the Grange Hall.

The blowup Hanukkiah donated by Jay and Adrienne Carsman stood proudly in one corner, while guests’ personal Hanukkiot dotted the tables for the communal candle lighting. Kosher gelt from Israel and a variety of dreidels decorated the tables for noshing and playing. Our Cantorial Soloist Phoebe Light led the group in a sing a long, including a song she wrote just for our group. New member Amanda Kadlubec created little centerpieces from leaves she found outside the Grange Hall in Los Olivos.

Of special note: Rozann Newman had offered to provide her delicious salmon, but then realized she could not attend the party. But a woman of her word, she brought the salmon for our dining pleasure and then left. The rest of the group provided especially yummy dishes. It was hard to not overeat that night!

Myra Howard, who brought an amazing variety of doughnuts, including traditional jelly ones, really got into the spirit of the holiday with her clever costume.

A BIG, BIG TODAH RABAH goes to the shopping/set up/clean up crew without whom the party could not have happened: Adrienne Carsman, Lenore Fusano, Amanda Kadulbec, Janet Rogers, Ari Weaver, Jeff Winter, and to the king of schlepping, Ron Margolis. And, of course, to our wonderful paid helpers: Margarita Leor and Rosita Garcia, as well as our security team of Eddie Hsueh and Tracee Walker. This was Tracee’s first time to provide security for us, and when asked Eddie what she thought of the party,  she said she loved it.

Wishing everyone a very Happy, Healthy, Safe New Year.
