Principal’s Notes

As the wind blows and the snow flies in January, my mind turns once again to summer sun and the excitement of September. In the Colleges and Student Affairs we rely on our student staff teams to create and host much of the programming we do and that means opportunities for skill development and paid work for our students.

I encourage you to check out the Job Posting 33701 on the Trent Job Board through the Student Experience portal and if there is a fit, apply. I know there are many great student leaders here in LEC and this is a wonderful opportunity to build your skills and spend the summer working on campus with great people. Please reach out to orientation@trentu.ca if you have any questions about the position.

Stay tuned in upcoming Newsletters for opportunities to be an Orientation Week Leader and for our College Office job postings and of course check out the Job Board for postings from all over campus.

Story Time with Steph

Hello Good Tadpoles, Toads, Frogs and Friends!

I hope this newsletter finds you well and with something great to look forward to this week. If you haven't taken a moment to define that joy, why not take a second with me now!? Is there something that sparks your joy that is accessible for you this week? What comes to mind when you think of this? Can you get it into your calendar? If this week is full, put it in for as soon as you can. You deserve good breaks and following your joy.

This week, our really fabulous Annual Lady Eaton Art Auction will begin taking submissions. You will be welcomed to bring in up to 3 submissions of your art. Please come with a short student artist bio, your Trent email and your student number, college affiliation, a description of each piece and a suggested staring bid. I am SO excited to see the art that you make and even more thrilled that we have found a way to make this years auction online! That means, we can get the word out to even more people who can bid from anywhere in the world and support Trent student artists! It is one of my most favourite LEC events! We set up the LEC Pit as an Art Gallery and we will have bidding taking place starting on January 30th and going until February 2nd, with a reception from 6-8pm in the Pit to get final bids in and meet the artists!

Our Annual LEC Photo Contest is coming up in February as well, and the snow sure does make for some toadally beautiful pictures are LEC! The top three have cash prizes- so, as you make your way through campus- maybe finding you joy is taking a breath for a stunning photo of our beautiful campus and submitting it in February- AND maybe that would even lend to funds to support more joyous planning!

I'm cheering you on!

Toad-ally Top Three

Hello friends!

I’m new to the Drumline team this semester so I decided to start this little column where every week I’ll give you some entirely unsolicited recommendations! Each week I’ll give you my top three all time favourites on a new topic. Exciting!

To start us off this snowy week I thought it would be fun to promote one of my favourite winter activities… building snow people! So without further adieu… the top three best places to build a snow person on campus are:

  1. The LEC Quad- The Quad has such beautiful pine trees to set the perfect winter scene, with the added benefit of protection from that cold wind!

  2. The LEC South Field (can you tell I’m biased towards my home college?)- This spot is perfect if you want your snow person to wave to all the cars going by!

  3. The Gzowski Quad- To give credit where it’s due, East Bank has some great snow person spots too. I think outside Gzowski overlooking the river is the best!

If you build a snow person around campus I’d love to see it, send it to us on socials!

See you later alligators,

Happy Monday LEC!

Its been super cold and snowy this past week, so I hope you’ve been staying warm. This time of year when the weather is bitter I tend to gravitate towards fantasy novels. I’m not usually a big fan of high fantasy, but I have read some that have turned out to be favourites.

Recommendation: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake! Sisters! Competition! Magical abilities! This is the first book in a riveting series following three sisters in a competition for the throne!

Toothpicks and Glue

Hey party rockers,

I’m sorry for that introduction, but I need to get your attention. I haven’t had a written column since the summer but I have an important question. Are you a Trent student, apart of any college, who makes art or knows someone who makes art? Well guess what, any student artists (and hey, anyone’s an artist) can submit their artwork to the LEC Art Auction! And you haven’t even heard the best part, the student (you, or someone you know) gets the full amount of the bid! However much it sells for goes directly in your pocket! Or I guess digital pocket. The bids will be accepted through (preferably) cash with the possibility of e-transfer if the artist and buyer are comfortable with it! You can submit up to 3 pieces alongside your name, a short artist description, and name of piece(s) with short description and starting bid in the LEC college office all this week!

So get involved and make some art! Do it with your friends! Have fun with it!
The art auction is very special to me and I hope it can be special for you too. I hope to see you there!

Musings on Music

Hello!

I recently watched the entire James Bond saga with Daniel Craig, and as I was watching Spectre, I could not let go of the fact that they didn’t include the amazing song that Radiohead made. Perhaps I am a bit biased because I like Radiohead. Anyways, just a thought I wanted to put out there, that I let it linger. Every year I wait (and fear) for my Spotify wrapped, and yet last year was another year that I did not share it on social media because last time I listened to the “number one song played” was probably in February. And maybe this is a never-ending cycle, but today (a Friday as am writing this), today I feel I if I get these songs on my wrapped, I would be super happy.

- How Soon Is Now?, The Smiths

- Spectre, Radiohead

- This Mess We’re In, PJ Harve and Thom Yorke

- 15 Steps, Radiohead

- No Dejes Que…, Caifanes

- The Headmaster Ritual, The Smiths

- Estrechez De Corazón, Los Prisioneros

- Linger, The Cranberries

Stay toasty!

Almost immediately, it became clear to me that I was not safe in Kyiv, especially given my work. At the time, it was almost impossible to predict how the conflict would evolve, That, combined with the fact that I knew I was at increased risk because of my professional work as an anti-corruption expert, I decided it was best to leave the country as quickly as possible. Chernovol will be speaking about her experiences since the outbreak of war in Ukraine and her arrival in Canada.
