Blockages and Rectal Discharge were the two most searched for topics on our website in 2023 with nearly 50,000 pages views.

A blockage, also known as a bowel obstruction, leads to the output from your stoma slowing down or even stopping altogether.

It's normal for ostomates who still have their rectum in place to experience rectal discharge and to pass clear or putty coloured mucus from their anus. Even though motions now pass out through the stoma, the rectum continues to produce the mucus that was previously used as a lubricant to assist the passage of food and waste.

If you're looking for information on how to best manage these and other stoma problems please check out the stoma problems page on our website or call our 24 hour stoma helpline on 0800 328 4257

Stoma and B12 Deficiency

Maintaining optimal nutrition is crucial for people with a stoma.

Did you know that one essential nutrient to focus on is vitamin B12. Since the body’s ability to absorb B12 may be compromised after stoma surgery (depending on the type of surgery and how much bowel is left), it is important to ensure an adequate intake of vitamin and mineral levels.

This article by specialist dietitian Pooja Dhir, aims to help those who may be struggling with a B12 deficiency.
