Open Build Nights
. . . are every Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm (except the first Wednesday of the month which is our Members Meeting). We invite the public to come for a tour, meet some of our members, bring a project to work on, an item to fix, or just hang out and chat with other makers. It’s a great way to see what we’re all about!

Maker Spotlight
Alan built these speakers at Chris and Bill's ever-popular Design & Build Your Own Speaker class and then took them to the next level with veneer. In true Decatur Maker spirit, Alan shared his hands-on learning experience on the show and tell channel, to give the next maker trying their hand at veneer a leg up.
Goal: veneers that follow the roundover on all 4 sides of the front of speaker in a continuous fashion with a book matched sapwood accent on the sides.Techniques used:
- use veneer softener
- glue both surfaces of veneer, let dry, iron on
- Use steam/steamer to assist w wood bending
Lessons learned:
- power sanders will blow through edges and corners really fast even if you are watching out for it :( will hand sand next time
- MDF soaks up glue and need to apply thicker / multiple coats prior to iron-on step
- I used a steamer to help with the bend but I didn’t do it until I had added glue. This caused a lot of cracking in the veneer. Next time I will steam the curves parallel the grain before gluing and let it dry which should reduce cracking and improve bonding.
- I should “joint” the bookmatch surfaces before attaching so that there is a tight joint. Using veneer tape as well should help.
- Finishing veneers is unforgiving. I need to be sure to not have any glue slop (or sand it all) as it doesn’t take finish. Edges of veneers are super fragile and tear easily.
