Spice Kitchen, a manufacturer of spice products based in Liverpool, is forecast to double productivity and sales to £2m and create new jobs after investing in data and systems technologies, with the support of Made Smarter. Find out more here
Knowsley-based carbon ceramic brakes manufacturer, Surface Transforms, is set to expand thanks to a £13.2m investment from Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram’s Urban Development Fund which is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. Find out more here
A diabetic’s mission to remove artificial sweeteners from soft drinks is being backed with a £440,000 loan from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Flexible Growth Fund. The investment will enable the Aintree-based Happy Drinks Company to create 24 jobs as it expands its bottling and manufacturing capabilities to meet rapidly growing demand. Find out more here
Peel Ports Group has strengthened its global container operations with the appointment of a new Strategic Commercial Director. Marcus Connolly joins the port operator with more than 25 years’ experience in international container shipping and logistics, having held roles at A.P. Moller – Maersk and NYSHEX. Find out more here

Corporate Connections: BAE Systems Seeking novel insulation products for Naval Ships.
Naval Ships traditionally fit thermal insulation to ships by means of steel fixing pins that hold fibre based insulation in place throughout. BAE Systems are interested in novel insulation products that do not require steel fixing pins, are easy to fit/apply and can pass Royal Navy approved stringent fire, smoke and toxicity regulations, and when operating in conjunction with the ships HVAC system will maintain the specified ships compartment temperature in a range of external temperatures.

Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Cluster
LYVA Labs are establishing an innovation network for the advanced manufacturing sector to support R&D development of new propositions in Liverpool City Region. Projects will be aligned to the national themes of net zero, supply chain resilience and digitalisation.

Funding & Support
Flexible Growth Fund
The Flexible Growth Fund provides fast access to finance, removing bottlenecks to unlock existing investment opportunities and leverage private sector investment in job-creating and job-sustaining projects. Loan repayments will be recycled back into the fund, providing new loan capital. This ‘evergreen’ model of fund recycling is a creative method of maximising fund values.

The fund is open to any business in the City Region which is undertaking an expansion project which creates or secures jobs.

Innovate UK Smart Grants January 2024
UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £25 million for game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovations that can significantly impact the UK economy. This funding is from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation.

Global Explorers 
Global Explorers is an Innovate UK programme designed to support individual UK SMEs to explore global R&D and innovation opportunities to accelerate the development of their innovative ideas, products and services and global market access.

Grant funding is available for up to 70% of  eligible project activities, up to a maximum of £21,000. The business will need to contribute the remaining 30% of project costs (in kind, financial or non-financial)
