The Power of Sound

Here at the Groovalution, we owe a great deal of gratitude to Emile Berliner. On this day in 1891, Berliner patented the first telegraph and telephone combo that played music. He gave us the first successful consumer sound gadget, which paved the way for all the audio devices (and streaming!) we enjoy today.

Thomas Edison's tinfoil phonograph may have come first in 1877, but it produced poor quality sounds from round cylinders. Alexander Graham Bell's graphophone required wax cylinders to record, limiting the mass-production of music or sounds.
