FEBRUARY 2024

Making Highgate a Better Place to Live and Work
The Highgate Society could save your life…yes really. We run two defibrillators in Highgate, we check they are working, replace batteries when needed - and indeed we replaced a defibrillator when one was stolen. We also run training sessions so there should always be a trained user available - and we want to buy a third defibrillator. It all needs money and so we’re fundraising. Please see below for more details and give generously.

In other news we continue to run reports of the situation on our roads highlighting danger spots for pedestrians and cyclists. Of course the hidden killer is pollution from the overall volume of traffic.

Tickets are still available to hear why you should visit Jordan, and of course there is always Saturday Morning Coffee in our hall from 10.30am every Saturday.

We hope you enjoy our newsletter - feedback is always welcome. Just hit reply on this email.
NEWS
Highgate Hill and Highgate West Hill traffic

Pelican crossing between Channing Junior School and Cote

Look in this photo at how wide the road is and how narrow the pavement is! The balance is not appropriate: (1) it makes it too easy for vehicles to go fast; (2) too far for pedestrians to cross; and (3) pedestrians on the Haringey side sometimes need to step into the road to pass.

Our campaign to improve safety on Highgate Hill has generated many responses from members and residents. Here are comments from two about this dangerous pelican crossing between Channing Junior School and Cote restaurant.

We have also received comments from a resident on Highgate West Hill about dangerous driving on that road - see here.
Traffic walk 3 - Swains Lane, South Grove and Highgate High Street

As explained on the Traffic page of our web site, we’ve started a series of traffic walks to identify where there are snarl ups, the parking situation, and facts about walking and cycling as well as pavement conditions. Go to the web site for links to the notes on the first two walks. The latest report can be seen here.
Fundraising for a third defibrillator

Defibrillator outside the Pond Square toilets

In 2018, the Resuscitation Council UK stated that fewer than one person in 10 survives a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) if it occurs outside hospital; and this was still the case last year. The use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), can significantly increase the chance of saving life in these circumstances if performed promptly and in 2019 the Highgate Society worked with pH.7 Life in Balance on the installation of two of these devices in Highgate. The society is now raising funds for the ongoing maintenance of the two existing AEDs, training sessions to increase the number of people who will be able to help if a SCA occurs and to purchase an additional public defibrillator.
