E-News

It was great seeing members at the Open Membership Meeting last Saturday!

Many great discussions were had about upcoming events, the potential power of the WAEA as advocates for stronger arts education in the state of Washington and how we can strengthen our membership through awards, recognition, student scholarships, SEL/JEDI networking, professional development, research opportunities, art shows for educators and students, along with virtual and regional in person workshops and gatherings.

When you write it all out... we are a powerhouse!

I am in awe of all the things that were "slated" and the collaborative force of the people in the room willing to connect with each other to share the load of work that it takes.

I encourage more members to attend our Open Membership Meetings to find your niche and develop your passion and service to the arts education collective of Washington State. It is an important role, and I am reminded each Membership Meeting how important our role is for the students and the future of the arts community, and the greater community.

I will highlight some of the initiatives, new and continuing, here in the E-News... I also encourage you to review the Agenda and Minutes of our Open Membership meeting if you missed it. They are located on the waea.net website under Events > Meetings > Meeting Minutes.

Please click here to Review the Strategic Plan of the WAEA. Feel free to add to our Growth Chart as well.
We are pleased to announce that...

Celebrate Youth Art Month!

March is designated as National Youth Art Month. Youth Art Month is the time to showcase visual art programs throughout schools, districts, communities and all of Washington.  It is recognized throughout the United States as an opportunity to celebrate and serve as an advocacy tool to promote the importance of visual art in educating children as a whole. We promote Youth Art Month as a vehicle to advocate the importance of the visual arts.

Here are two important ways for YOU to celebrate this year:

1. Participate in the Flag Design Competition!

The theme for 2023-2024 is "Dream In Art" We have pushed back the due date to 2/10/24.

Be on the lookout for a PPT to use as inspiration with your students! It will be added to the YAM webpage and shared to our WAEA Facebook group in the coming week.

2. Obtain a Proclamation from your Principal, Superintendent, School Board, and/or Mayor so they can declare March as Youth Art Month!

Nicole Dibble, Youth Art Month Chair, has sent one to Jay Inslee (WA Governor) and Chris Reykdal (WA Superintendent of Public Instruction).

Here is an YAM Proclamation Letter to edit with your local info and who you are sending it to.

Here is the Proclamation itself to email or drop off with your letter. The earlier you can send it the better. We also recommend checking back a week after on the status of the Proclamation.

This is a great advocacy tool to put the spotlight on all the great things we do to enhance students' lives through the power of Art!

Please reach out to Nicole Dibble if you have any questions at yam@waea.net

The visual arts classroom can be a unique space for valuing disabilities and differences, and this webinar will focus on creating an inclusive educational environment by learning to apply the principles of universal design, interdependence, and allyship. In honor of MLK Day, I wanted to share this letter I recently read from Dr. James Haywood Rolling, Jr., recent past-president of NAEA.

“Black Lives Matter: An Open Letter to Art Educators on Constructing an Anti-Racist Agenda”

His message here on Constructing an Anti-Racist Agenda is a wonderful read in honor of the work being done, and that still needs to be done, within our organizations and ourselves.

His FRAMEWORK OF SUGGESTED INTERVENTIONS is a thought-provoking way of auditing myself as to what I am currently doing in my life to design an anti-racist world?

Dr. James Haywood Rolling, Jr. has also published 2 books that we want to share with you.

Shannon and I had the honor of seeing him speak at our Pacific Leadership retreat this past summer on the topics from this first book and were truly inspired.

The first is, Growing up Ugly: Memoirs of a Black Boy Daydreaming

Growing Up Ugly is an inspirational coming-of-age memoir that traces the upbringing of a painfully shy child with chronically low self-esteem--a Black boy reprimanded for daydreaming too much and raised in a struggling inner-city New York neighborhood--who eventually grew to become an artist, a leading educator, and an award-winning scholar.

The second is one for the little ones. Discovering African American Art for Children (Come Look With Me)

The artwork presented in this book is a small representation of a very remarkable effort by African Americans in the United States during the twentieth century to portray our developing self-image as citizens who have shaped not only ourselves, but have helped to develop the shape and color of all of our aspirations.
It is a great time of year to start planning your travel plans to get you and your network to the NAEA National Convention | April 4-6
