Hello Hornets!

 

Welcome to the first edition of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion newsletter! In this week’s DEI newsletter we cover some stories that positively represent our section including the CFA’s tentative agreement, the first banquet honoring Students for Justice in Palestine and art exhibits with entrusting messages in honor of Black History month.

Sac State hosts first SJP and ASU banquet

Students for Justice in Palestine and Arab Student Union’s inaugural banquet showcased flags throughout the evening in the Union Ballroom Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. Sac State’s inaugural Students for Justice in Palestine and Arab Student Union banquet showcased the cultures of Arab and Palestinian students  on Feb. 10, in the University Union Ballroom.

Pictures were displayed of Gaza before the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and tables decorated with red poppy flowers as representation for Palestinians.

Traditional music was played by the DJ, following a fashion show of traditional Arabic attire.  The night ended with a buffet style cultural feast.

CFA tentative agreement: A step in the right direction

The California Faculty Association planned a weeklong statewide strike from Jan. 22 -26, but was cut to just a day after a tentative agreement with California State University was reached. A vote about the ratification of the agreement between CFA and CSU took place between Feb. 12-18. (Graphic created in Canva by Julianna Rodriguez)

The California Faculty Association’s week-long strike ends after being given a tentative agreement.

This tentative agreement comes with a small pay increase, an increase in parental leave, and extended paid bereavement.

Faculty gave their thoughts and concerns on matters within the original agreement that have yet to be met, such as more gender neutral bathrooms and lactation spaces on campus.

Black History is American History at the Crocker Art Museum

“Black Artists in America: Civil Rights to the Bicentennial” and “Joyce J. Scott: Messages” were some of the pieces featured during the Black History Month Family Festival at the Sacramento Crocker Art Museum.

The exhibit consisted of poets from local high schools and colleges. Juanita Gonzales is one of the student poets from Sacramento City College who had her poem beneath a painting called “Lagos Nigeria” drawn by James A. Porter in 1964.

The Crocker Art Museum annually curates exhibits for Black History Month.

70s Bay Area feminist art takes over University Art Gallery

 “She Laughs Back: Feminist Wit in 1970s Bay Area Art” art gallery made its debut on Sac State’s campus on Feb 6. 

The gallery included 20 Bay Area female artists and 95 pieces of artwork dedicated to the women empowerment movement in the 70s. Some artists included Kathy Goodell and Lorraine Garcia-Nakata.

Curator for this inspirational exhibit was professor of modern and contemporary art, Elanie O’Brien.
