Observatorio Socioambiental sur de Venezuela #02

Resumen Ejecutivo

El observatorio realiza un monitoreo y mapeo continuo de la huella minera, cambios en la cobertura vegetal, cambios en el uso del suelo y busca hacer estimaciones de deforestación. Además, el observatorio monitorea sistemáticamente las redes sociales y la información que circula en los medios digitales e Internet. Toda esta información se alimenta en el observatorio, que genera datos que se incorporan a una base de datos para elaborar un diagnóstico confiable de la realidad socioambiental de la región: las características del problema socioambiental, su alcance y la respuesta oficial al mismo.

Además del diagnóstico, el observatorio pretende proponer criterios, soluciones y alternativas para mejorar la situación, e intentar hacer una proyección de las tendencias a corto o medio plazo. Si bien estos primeros informes analizan los estados Bolívar y Amazonas, nuestro enfoque holístico se basará en la totalidad del sur de Venezuela y el Escudo Guayanés, sus ecorregiones funcionalmente relacionadas y su división política territorial. Dada la información que hemos recopilado, todos los indicios apuntan a un empeoramiento de la situación en el sur de Venezuela.

Executive Summary

The observatory carries out continuous monitoring and mapping of the mining footprint, changes in vegetation cover, changes in land use, and seeks to make estimates of deforestation. Additionally, the observatory systematically monitors social networks and information circulating on digital media and the Internet. The observatory is fed all this information, which generates data that is incorporated into a database to craft a reliable diagnosis of the socio-environmental reality of the region: the characteristics of the socio-environmental problem, its scope, and the official response to it.

In addition to the diagnosis, the observatory intends to propose criteria, solutions and alternatives to improve the situation, and try to make a projection of the trends in the short or medium term. While these first reports are looking at the Bolivar and Amazonas states, our holistic approach will be founded upon the entirety of southern Venezuela and the Guianese Shield, its functionally related ecoregions, and its territorial political division. Given the information we've gathered, all indications point toward a worsening situation in Southern Venezuela.
