An update on where we left things in 2023 and what’s happening in 2024.
Blak Led Tours Tasmania
2024 New Years News
Welcome to 2024
I just wanted to start the first newsletter of 2024 thanking you for being a supporter of Blak Led Tours and Tasmanian Aboriginal storytelling
– thank you!
This News Years newsletter is just to update you on where we left things in 2023 and what’s happening in 2024.
A recap of 2023
In February 2023 mulaka milaythina/ the hunting ground was launched for the Clarence Jazz Festival, this included a new tour and a music/spoken word piece that was performed twice across the festival and recently brought back for the Richmond Bicentennial in December. It was great working with the Clarence Art and Events team, composerLouise Denson, dramaturge Sarah Hamilton and all the musicians on that project.
The mumara patrula/wood for the fire tour in Kettering was delivered to more than 300 attendees across 15 tours concluding a great and successful collaboration with the Kingborough council.
2023 was truly huge for takara nipaluna! There were more than 1000 attendees for the Hobart tour throughout the year.
In March 2023, Blak Led Tours received tourism accreditation and is now an officially TQF Sustainable Tourism accredited tourism business!
Some really big highlights for learning and networking came from attending the World Indigenous Tourism Summit in Perth the Tasmanian Tourism Conference in Launceston.
Throughout the year Nunami completed a series of artworks and private commissions, a particularly exciting and accessible one being the contribution of an essay in IanTerry’s photography and essay book ‘Uninnocent Landscapes’.The essay focuses on stories held in landscapes across lutruwita/Tasmania, land as a tool for cultural revival perspectives on George Augustus Robinsons’ diaries. The book is for sale everywhere great books are sold.
Finally in 2023, The last takara nipaluna/ Walking Hobart tour presented through the Theatre Royal took place on the 21st of December, concluding our two year partnership. I am truly grateful for the support and opportunity that came from working with the Theatre Royal over these last two years and am filled with so much gratitude for the whole team.
News for 2024
2024 is a year of big changes with Blak Led Tours transitioning to independent operation.
Takara nipaluna is now run completely in house with bookings on open directly via the freshly updated Blak LedTours website and via the Tasmanian Travel Information Centre in nipaluna/Hobart.
Tours for January and February are now open for booking with gift cards and private groups still available.
I’ve also launched the takara nipaluna ad-on activity book for children and young people who attend the nipaluna tour, it features a series of engaging activities to deepen connection to the content and Tasmanian Aboriginal learning as we make our way through the city.
An exciting new addition for Blak Led Tours is the ‘lakapawa palawa nipaluna-ti’ the Blak Led Tours guide to Tasmanian Aboriginal public art in nipaluna/Hobart that can be downloaded for free on the website or a physical copy picked up from partner locations around the city.
As a subscriber to the newsletter I wanted to share with you first, the new Discover Nipaluna Itinerary with some of my favourite Aboriginal tours and activities around the city and beyond (even though a few are Blak Led Tours experiences) - I really hope you find something new and enjoy it!
Over the next few months, I’ll be finishing a new development of a tour for Wybalenna onFlinders Island for the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania and working on anew tour around kunanyi. I’ll also be looking to launch self-guided options for all existing tours as well as some really exciting products and merchandise.
nayri nina-tu / thank you
I hope this has enticed you to stay tuned for the next quarterly newsletter but more importantly, wishing you a great 2024, hope to see you around nipaluna.
Until then, all the best,
Nunami Sculthorpe-Green.
