Making Democracy Work Awards

The LWVO will present Making Democracy Work Awards to individuals and/or organizations creating sustainable, positive change in our community. We encourage all Oakland residents and Oakland-based organizations to submit nominations by January 15thLearn more.    

Thanks to our end-of-year donors: We rely on donations for most of our operations, so we couldn’t do what we do without you. A special thanks to the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco for its generous grant to support our voter information translation services, and distribution of our voter engagement materials to local schools.

AB 1185 allows counties to create civilian oversight boards to increase accountability and transparency of the Sheriff's Office, including jails and policing. Join by zoom or in person to learn how our Board of Supervisors can implement such civilian oversight.

City Underspent Parks Funds: Measure Q, passed by voters in  2020, authorized a parcel tax for city park maintenance. The City Auditor found the City underspent collected taxes by nearly $22 million. He also found the City could not assess the effectiveness of Measure Q and has not fully implemented oversight requirements. Read more.
