Seeing One Another Clearly
(Mission Discernment Part 1)

Rev. Ann Kadlecek
with Worship Associate Carol Boston

We’ve all encountered “other people” with a distorted sense of reality, but still we humans like to think that we perceive ourselves, one another and the world clearly. But do we? How might we see one another more clearly? And what difference might it make, for us and for the world?

What are these colorful little packages?

What do they have to do with our worship service?

And what’s inside???

Join us at 3pm January 7 and find out!

If you’re in-person, you’ll get your very own during the service.

And we’ll have some extra for on-line attendees to receive later if you wish.

See you in church!

A note from your Minister
(January 5, 2024)

Whether or not we like to make resolutions, the start of a new year can inspire both reflecting on our past and imagining our future.  Where have we been getting in our own way?  Where are we ready for some healing?  What can we hope for?

Here at Paint Branch, as we begin this new year, we’re entering into a time of intentional listening, reflecting and imagining together.  It’s a process that invites us into some healing, and into the beginning of conversation about the mission of this church.

Those participating in the mission discernment small groups will engage in this work in those groups.  And our worship services for the next six Sundays, except January 14, will connect to and support the group process.

If you’re participating in a small group, and you’re able to, please attend each service or watch the video before your group meets.

I’m pretty excited about these groups.  Your facilitators have been through the process themselves, as a group, and their conversations were deep, and true, and hopeful.  I wish the same for you.

And … to get us going … are you wondering what’s in the little packages?  Join us at 3pm on Sunday and find out!

In faith,

Rev. Ann

Singers Wanted To Sing Lift Every Voice And Sing During January 14 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Day Service

Jeanne Judd, facilitator of the Paint Branch Music Task Force, is recruiting members and friends to sing Lift Every Voice And Sing during our annual MLK Day Sunday Service on January 14.

Chaplain Anthony Jenkins, our Guest Minister for that Service, has asked that we sing it twice—as the opening and closing hymn. We’ll use the version on page 149 of the grey hymnal, Singing The Living Tradition.

Interested? Stay after the January 7 Service. We’ll begin rehearsing at 4:15 for no more than 45 minutes.

Be at church at 1:45pm on January 14, the day of the Service for a final rehearsal and tech check.

Contact Jeanne at jeanneandchris2@verizon.net if you’d like more information.

From the Treasurers

Hello Fellow Paint Brancher,

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!  And a year-end reminder from your Treasurers:

It’s a good time to make sure your pledge contributions are up to date for this Church fiscal year through the end of December 2023 (which, of course, is the tax calendar year). If you are not sure of your end of the year status, just contact Treasurer@pbuuc.org.

Thank you all for what you do!
Treasurers (Liz and Tess)

The Paint Branch Racial Climate Coalition (RCC) will meet on Thursday,  1/11 from 7-9 over Zoom. The purpose of the RCC is to promote congregation-wide collaboration on creating a healthy racial climate at PBUCC.

The RCC brings together representatives from each Committee and Affinity Group, Board Members, Church Officers, and Staff. Members and Friends who are not affiliated with any Committee or Affinity Group but who have an interest in this work are also welcome.

Your ideas, energy and commitment to creating a healthy racial climate at PBUUC are welcome and needed. If you attended prior meetings, no need to RSVP for this one. If you haven't attended a meeting and would like to participate, please RSVP to Deb Rubenstein at RCC@pbuuc.org to get the Zoom link and the agenda. The Zoom link is also here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84368052826

Visiting Steward Recruiting is Happening
—EMBRACING OUR COMMUNITY!

We are approaching the Stewardship Campaign for the 2024-2025 church year, and we need helpers!  Would you like to be part of this important activity?  The time commitment is low (attend training (1.5 hours) and contact no more than five people (over a 6-week period), and the work is vital to our community.  Please contact Kathi Yu (kathiyu@gmail.com) or Liz Citrin (liz.citrin@gmail.com) to volunteer or if you want a little more information.  Thank you.

Next Sunday, January 7, 2024 Quest Discussion Group will be meeting via Zoom from 11:45-1:00pm to begin selecting our next book. Possible selections were due Monday, January 1 by midnight.  For any questions, please contact Tess Morrison at tmorriso@illinois.edu.

SPIRITUALITY CIRCLE

Spirituality Circle meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 11. Spirituality Circle is one of the many ways we come together at Paint Branch to find, develop and enhance our sense of belonging in community. It’s about encouragement and curious exploration of a variety of spiritual practices that connect us with the sacred. We support each other in our individual challenges and pursuits.

We are using a curriculum called “Faith Forward” again. In this series we are introduced to and asked to “try on” many different spiritual practices. We are asked to ‘keep an open mind and see what comes up for you’. Our bodies and minds mature. The same is true of our spirits. Practices that may not have served us well at one point in our lives, may serve you now. We are encouraged to approach these practices with “new eyes” and a sense of curiosity.

We will not be meeting this Sunday.  Happy Holidays to all!  Our next meeting is Sunday, Jan. 14th at 11 when we will conclude our discussion on Session 4 – “Prayer” and begin a discussion On Session 5 – Meditation.  Attending previous sessions is not necessary for attending any session but if you want information about them you are encouraged to look at the Handouts available below.

Hope you will join us. Here is the new link:
