SB Reads 2023 Success
Because of donors like you, the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation supported the 2023 SB Reads distribution and community exploration of over 1,500+ print and digital copies of Isabel Allende’s 2021 novel A Long Petal of the Sea from September to November.

Highlights from SB Reads 2023!
○ Over 460 community members participated in 34 public programs, including workshops, book discussions, lectures, hands-on events, and panels.

○  Programs were offered primarily for adult audiences, but extended to all ages with a storytelling workshop for teens, a book discussion and watercolor activity for 10–15-year-olds, and a storytime for children. October’s Maker Challenge was designed with the intention of exploring the themes on immigration journeys in both A Long Petal of the Sea and Dreamers.

Twelve organizations, community members, scholars, and businesses made SB Reads come to life and foster community in different venues, over different mediums with the intention of exploring themes or issues in the novel.

Appreciation for:
     ■ Wylde Works
     ■ Buena Onda Empanadas
     ■ Jenna Tico of Backbone Storytelling
     ■ Melinda Palacio, Santa Barbara Poet Laureate

SB Reads Story
A librarian shared an interaction from an SB Reads 2023 Chess Day Program. They shared, "We had a young boy (around 7-9 years old) come into the chess event on Saturday with his mother. He played a few games with other participants before I had an opportunity to speak with his mother. She mentioned that he had learned how to play chess over the summer and became fixated with the game. He was a struggling reader and worked on his reading skills to be able to read chess books. There was an older man who played against the young boy and began coaching him. The two came in today to play chess and continue coaching!"
The novel's themes of belonging, family, home, friendships, and identity lended themselves well to programs that would encourage the community to engage in conversations about the novel and explore multi-forms of creative expression through poetry, storytelling, painting, music, writing, art making.

SB Reads continues to be well received and this year's Santa Barbara Public Library selection in particular was extremely popular. This was the first time the SB Reads main title was originally written in Spanish. While offering the featured title in Spanish has been a priority for the Library when selecting a book, the last several years, both patrons and Library staff feedback recommended the Library seek out titles that had been translated into English from Spanish. This will be an ongoing priority for the Library into 2024.
Thank you to all SB Reads 2023 sponsors, with special acknowledgment to those contributing $1,000 or more. We would also like to express a heartfelt thank you to Nora McNeely Hurley and the Manitou Fund for their generous contribution in honor of Marjorie Reeds McNeely providing even more copies of this year's title.

Stay tuned for the SB Reads 2024 title announcement!
