✅ Support a good cause

Just show up at Short Leash Hot Dogs, located at 4221 N 7th Ave., on Saturday, January 9, at 8 a.m.

Short Leash isn’t officially open then, but we still enjoy coffee and Roll Over Doughnuts while introducing ourselves and readying for the ride.

Then we enjoy a two-hour, family-friendly ride. All fitness levels are welcome, which means no one gets left behind on this casual, leisurely ride. We take a break in a park about halfway through.

We end up where we started, but this time Short Leash Hot Dogs is open. So we hang out for a bit and enjoy some post-ride snacks and beverages.

Osborn Community Bike Ride

Enjoy the more cycle-friendly Osborn Road on Saturday, January 20 at 1 p.m. during a fun community bike ride.

The ride is a casual, family-friendly ride that will end at the North Park Central Neighborhood G.A.I.N Block Party.

Meet at the Osborn School District Office, located at 1226 W. Osborn Road. The route will take cyclists west to 19th Avenue and then back to 11th Avenue.

PSP 2023 Year in Review:
Fun Social Rides & Huge Advocacy Wins

Last year was a very busy – but incredibly effective – year for PSP!

We racked up some significant advocacy victories, proving once again that when it comes to making Phoenix a friendlier place to ride a bike, your voice and active participation matter.

Here’s a list of highlights from our rabble-rousing efforts:

McDowell Revitalization Project Revision

We urged the city to better integrate safe cycling options as part of its ambitious McDowell Revitalization project.

A March project update specifically mentions that “community members were vocal about wanting a safe place to bicycle along McDowell Road.”

As a result, the Street Transportation Department, the Maricopa Association of Governments and consultants for the project agreed to take a second look at some traffic data. The group is now actively working to find ways to reduce traffic lanes and include bike lanes.

Got the Vision Zero Community Advisory Community to Do Better

The Vision Zero Community Advisory Committee for Phoenix’s Road Safety Action Plan was originally slated to meet only four times a year.

We knew that wasn’t enough to transform Phoenix roadways and let the city know that.

Soon after, the Phoenix City Council voted to approve a new subcommittee meeting schedule under which it met every other month.

Additionally, our (and your!) continued participation at these meetings ensures the group takes real, practical action that results in safer roadways. There’s always a risk of getting bogged down in acquiring, analyzing and discussing data and traffic studies…without implementing solutions.

We won’t let that happen – we’ll be at every meeting and publish updates in this newsletter.

Other ways we successfully advoacted for change include:

  • Lowering the speed limit on sections of 3rd Street north of Roosevelt Street.
  • Protected bike lanes on Osborne Road from 19th Avenue to 11th Avenue.
  • Our budget hearing participation encouraged Phoenix to focus on 3rd Street from Lincoln Avenue to Roosevelt Road.

We’re proud of the positive ways we impacted the city’s roadways but we always welcome more support. Become a member, volunteer for Bike Valet, or attend public meetings.

Phoenix Spokes People is now on Nextdoor

Neighborhoods are key locations for safe, fun bike riding so it only makes sense that PSP is now on Nextdoor, the location-centric social media platform that allows people to connect on a hyperlocal level.

We can’t wait to connect with you in this new way!

Become a PSP Member

Are you:
  • A fan of friendly, casual bike events?
  • Wanting better bicycle infrastructure and safer streets?
  • Looking for fun, impactful volunteer activities?
Then an annual Phoenix Spokes People membership is for you! We are a non-profit organization dedicated to making Phoenix a friendly, safe, and welcoming place to ride a bike. We believe cycling should be an easily accessible form of transportation for people of all ages, incomes and abilities, and we're working hard to make that come true.

For $20 a year ($15 for students) you can support our advocacy and community building and help cover costs like this newsletter and ride insurance. Thanks for your support!

Bike Valet Returns!

Phoenix winter means plenty of events to ride to, including the Phoenix Downtown Farmers Market and Phoestivus.

Phoenix Spokes People has consistently provided a much-needed Bike Valet service at these events.

It works just like valet for cars. Attendees drop their bikes with us, and:

  • A PSP volunteer takes the bike, stores it on a portable rack, and tags it with a claim check.
  • Each claim check has a unique number, and a portion for the bike owner to keep.
  • When the bike owner leaves the event they exchange their claim ticket stub for their bike. Easy!
But we need volunteers to keep Bike Valet going strong. Even if you have only an hour to give, we can promise you a fun time giving back to the local bike community. You'll meet fellow bicyclists and sometimes we even get event tickets, food, or swag (though we can't guarantee these perks).

Whether you're an event venue who is interested in having bike valet at your event or an amazing person who wants to volunteer, contact us at valet@phoenixspokespeople.org.
