FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

A Message from the Acting Vice Provost

What a thought-provoking session we had recently in the Staff Development session hosted by the For and With Others Committee. I’m grateful for the perspective on cura personalis shared by Father Sullivan, SJ, to continue to advance our reflection and conversation and deepen our understanding of the founding intent of this beloved concept we hold dearly. We discussed care for the whole person, in the mirror of how God sees and cares for individuals and their unique gifts. At my table, we discussed how we often interpret and enact this towards others, but how this holistic compassionate care is also applicable to ourselves.

As individuals, and as a community, we have carried a lot this year. Even in the past couple of weeks, we have carried and accompanied others with the passing of one of our Creighton students, navigating national news of the death by suicide of Dr. Candia Bailey, Vice President of Student Affairs at Lincoln University and the rippling trauma surfaced about the stressors and conditions for Black women (and other people of color) in higher education, and observed continued tragedy in the Middle East, among others.

With significant stressors like these abound, alongside the challenges of our own unique burdens and balances in life – let’s remind ourselves to extend cura personalis in how we view others and extend compassionate care to them, and grace ourselves with that same extension of care for ourselves as well. In addition to generally promoted self-care practices, be reminded that the University Employee Assistance Program has additional resources available as well.

In all, know you are loved and cared for!
Leanna

Black History Month

In February we celebrate Black History Month, celebrating the contributions of African Americans to the United States. As Creighton University celebrates Black History Month, be on the lookout for opportunities to celebrate, honor these contributions, and interact with students!

As we look at the critical contributions of African Americans in the history of our country, it highlights the triumphs accomplished despite the discrimination and systemic barriers to this success. I encourage us all to continue to engage in the self-reflection and critical learning required to contribute to more racially just organizations and society as our contributions to the future of Black History in America. Below are a few racial justice books that I have personally appreciated in case you’re interested – you may have your own recommendations for each other as well.

  • Why are all the black kids sitting together in the cafeteria – Beverly Tatum
  • Caste: The origins of our discontents – Isabel Wilkerson
  • White fragility:  Why it’s so hard to talk about racism – Robin Diangelo
  • How to be antiracist – Ibram Kendi
  • Uncomfortable conversations with a Black Man - Emmanuel Acho
  • Decentering whiteness in the workplace:  A guide for equity and inclusion – Janice Gassam Asare
  • The memo:  What women of color need to know to secure a seat at the table – Minda Hart

Gathering Together
I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our next Student Life divisional meeting today, Thursday, February 1 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. Central Time in Harper 4067 or on Zoom.

A Message From Cocoa

Hi furriends! It's that time of year when you might be feeling sick of the wet cold under your paws or the chilly wind ruffling your fur. And if you're like this chocolate labrador, you may be more in the mood for nappies instead of walkies, stealin' donuts instead of prepping healthy kibble, and staying in your kennel instead waggin' about with the other doggos. And some days, these first options are just what a girldog needs! But after a few days of this, I do notice I start to feel kind of meh and my tail feels heavier to wag. So if you've got a case of the winter blues like me, what could help YOU to shake them off a bit? Is there a furriend you haven't seen in a while? Has journaling fallen off? Little too much screen time these days? Gotta find a fun way to get your wiggles out? Been a while since you did that cool hobby? Give it some thought. And you know what? I realize now that after sharing my feels with you, I'm noticing I feel a bit lighter - maybe I'll opt for walkies today!
