On track for a community that makes sustainable living easy

The NAIT/Blatchford Market stop – the first of two Blatchford stations – began operating ahead of schedule on Jan. 20.🎉 Once area ridership increases, City Council will determine when the community’s north station, Blatchford Gate, opens to the public.

Not sure where these stations are located? See the features on this community map for the LRT route and more.

FUN FACT: The new station is located in Blatchford’s future town centre, which will be known as Blatchford Market.

And here are a few more...

🏠 Prioritizing people over cars: In 2022, on-road transportation was responsible for nearly one-third of city-wide emissions in Edmonton. The NAIT/Blatchford Market station opening is another step towards transforming Blatchford into an integrated transit-oriented development.

🚉 Transit capacity: The station’s longer platform accommodates four- and five-car trains (vs the standard three-car train station) to help meet future ridership demand.

☀️ Solar power: Panels installed on Blatchford LRT stations will provide about two-thirds of the power required for the stations.

🌱 A green mindset: 400 trees and 1,600 shrubs were planted as part of the project.

📚 The station opened ahead of schedule: It replaces the temporary NAIT station.

Welcome Home series features Blatchford residents

In their Welcome Home series, Why Edmonton highlights the best that Edmonton has to offer – including communities like beautiful Blatchford.

“I've never really known my neighbours before. The people who live here want to live here. It was a very deliberate choice coming to Blatchford and there’s a lot of shared values and environmentally conscious families.”

Residents Derek Lindskoog and Tristin Hamilton provide a glimpse into what life's like in Blatchford, including the growth they’ve seen since calling it home just two short years ago – and how they fell in love with the idea of living in a central neighbourhood designed for sustainability.

McNally students take on sustainability

McNally High School recently invited the Blatchford team to participate in their Gr. 11 collaborative sciences project. During this annual two-day interdisciplinary activity, students tackle a local issue through the lens of biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science. This year’s theme included "sustainable communities” with an emphasis on environmentally and socially conscious practices – making the Blatchford community a perfect real-life example!
