Additional information about the Human Threat Extinction workgroup:
Given that extinction is proposed to be a key mechanism in exposure therapy, Xandra Kredlow, Joseph Dunsmoor, Bram Vervliet started a Human Extinction Workgroup within the International Exposure Therapy Consortium in 2022. The International Exposure Therapy Consortium is a consortium of researchers and clinicians working towards the goal of increasing the effectiveness and use of exposure therapies. An initial goal of the Human Extinction Workgroup is to generate a basic fear conditioning protocol that labs can adopt (in full or in part) that is optimally designed for studies examining extinction enhancement strategies (e.g., counterconditioning, gradual extinction, etc.). This approach has several advantages:
1.    It will allow researchers to more easily compare results of different studies of extinction enhancement strategies across labs given that many experimental parameters will be controlled. Extinction enhancement strategies could include paradigms some of our labs have been investigating (e.g., counterconditioning, gradual extinction, novelty-facilitated extinction, multiple extinction contexts, etc) but this could also be testing ground for new protocols that labs are developing.
2.    It will facilitate collaboration between fear extinction researchers and we hope lead to multi-site studies which will improve power to detect smaller effects.
3.    Data from control groups in these studies could be combined to look at individual difference factors that may relate to extinction enhancement strategy effectiveness and these data can also be more easily shared with other ongoing fear conditioning data sharing initiatives.
4.    We hope that our connection to the International Exposure Therapy Consortium facilitates future translation of effective extinction enhancement strategies to pre-clinical and clinical research.
