AKP Special Announcement
February 2024

Announcing Our New Data Management Partner:
Cornell Lab of Ornithology's NestWatch!

Back in December, we announced that some big changes to our data entry and management system were on the way. After a busy few months of work, we’re finally ready to announce the details. Short version: beginning with the 2024 breeding season, data entry and management for the American Kestrel Partnership (AKP) will take place through Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s NestWatch! It’s admittedly a big change, but an exciting one that will make the program more robust and relevant than ever.

The full details can be viewed through the links below or on our website, but here are the basics:
  • Starting in March 2024, data entry and management for the AKP will be handled through Cornell’s NestWatch rather than the AKP website. This transition is currently underway, and partners SHOULD NOT enter any data through NestWatch until the transition process is complete. We will notify our partners via email and on social media when we finish migrating the database to NestWatch and partners can begin data management there.
  • The entire existing AKP database will be migrated to the NestWatch database. Once this transition is complete, partners will be able to access all of the data they had previously entered through the AKP website using NestWatch tools.
  • There are several minor differences in the data entry process between the AKP and NestWatch. NestWatch staff have created an excellent guide detailing these differences.
  • If you already have a Cornell Lab account you want to use for your AKP data, please fill out this brief survey before 20 February 2024. If you don’t already have a Cornell Lab account, please create one here, then fill out the survey. If you choose not to create a Cornell Lab account, your data will still be migrated, but it will be inaccessible to you until you create one.

Starting in March 2024, partners will use Cornell Lab of Ornithology's NestWatch for data entry and management. Partners should NOT enter any data through NestWatch until the transition process is complete; once it is, we'll announce this via email and social media.  |  Photos courtesy of Boise State University.
  • The entire AKP website will be taken offline on or around 20 February 2024. Download anything you need from it before it is removed.
  • The Adopt-a-Box program is now using a new signup page.
  • Our newsletter and Facebook page will be discontinued after the transition is completed. Any content you wish to save from old newsletters can be downloaded here.
  • Our Social Media Guy™ is not out of a job; he will guest post on the other social media accounts run by our parent organization, The Peregrine Fund (Facebook / Instagram / YouTube).
Fans of the AKP Facebook page should follow/like/subscribe to The Peregrine Fund's other social media pages and let us know there if you want to see more content from the AKP Social Media Guy™.  |  Screenshotted comments from followers of the AKP Facebook page

The AKP won't be as visible as a separate entity in the future, but rest assured that we’re still here and you’re still a vital part of the team. Click here to read our full FAQ for more details.  |  Photo by Jenn Sinasac
We recognize this is a sizable change, but it’s an exciting one that will benefit not only our partners and the NestWatch program, but kestrel conservation as a whole. Time and again, research has proven the importance of collaboration in conservation, and we’re confident that this new collaboration between The Peregrine Fund, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and all of you will be a major step forward for kestrel conservation everywhere.

Welcome to the future. We’re glad you’re here.
Yours in partnership,
Robyn Bailey
