| Principal’s Notes | We have so much going on at LEC right now! Keep reading to learn all about our Art Auction, Photo Contest, Winter College Weekend and Curry Cookoff. This week I want to take a moment to highlight some visiting speakers who will join us on campus in the coming weeks. The first to share is the annual Morton Lecture which will happen on on Feb. 1, 2024, 4:00 pm Nozhem Theatre, Enwayaang Building. Named in honour of W.L. Morton, the Canadian historian and former Master of Trent's Champlain College, this prestigious lecture invites a leading Canadian scholar to campus to provide a talk. | | This year, Dr. Joana Joachim presents "Between Ought and Could: self-preservation and self-care as spatial acts." Joachim considers care and preservation as radical spatial acts through archival and art historical analyses, tracing the long history of Black care in sites of white colonial domination such as New France/Québec, arguing that it is inscribed in an ongoing effort to protect Black life and achieve Black liberation. |

| | Next I want to share that the Trent U. Library and Archives and the First Peoples House of Learning (FPHL) are excited to invite you to an upcoming talk featuring Indigenous human rights advocate Jeannette Corbiere Lavell in conversation with her daughter, Dr. Dawn Memee Lavell-Harvard (director of the FPHL). They will talk about their work advocating for the legal status rights of Indigenous women in the Indian act, as well as their efforts, research, and writing toward protecting the equality of Indigenous women and children.
| | Following their talk, there will be a virtual tour of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg. Former Peterborough Poet Laureate Sarah Lewis will also perform to open this event! Last week I was in Winnipeg and got the chance to visit the museum in person. While difficult at times, it is so important to understand the historical and current injustices so that we can be a part of the change that needs to happen. |

| Toad-ally Top Three | Hello friends!
I’m happy to report that we are already a quarter way through the term! I think this is the perfect time to establish some good habits and figure out what works best for us, before we get into midterms and big assignments *shivers*. Sooo… it’s a great time to find your ideal study spot! I know from personal experience as a student in residence that it’s nice to just get off campus sometimes, and as an off-campus student, getting to Trent can be a real pain (I’m looking at you Peterborough Transit). All that to say, this week I have compiled the top three off-campus study spots!
Black Honey Bakery- This is such a cute spot downtown with lots of yummy treats to reward yourself ! (Come into the College Office to find out how LEC students can get a discount!) Peterborough Public Library- This is a nice quiet spot if you want to really focus with minimal distractions. This spot has computers, printers, *and* private study rooms available to book. Fleming College A-Wing- I did some reconnaissance work for this one because those who live in South Peterborough deserve easy access to study spots too! This spot is open with lots of windows and I’m told its usually just busy enough to feel lively, if that’s your study vibe.
See you later alligators, Isabelle Lady Eaton College Student Ambassador Lover of Cozy Blankets and Hot Chocolate | Musings on Music | If Guardians of the Galaxy knows how to do something, that is needle drops. Star lord and his funky walk are engraved in my brain, and perhaps I also do a funky walk whenever I listen to “Come and Get Your Love” on the street. Needle drops are not only good because the song itself is good, but because it gives a deeper emotion to the scene, or maybe it just makes it more enjoyable. Either way, needle drops are amazing, and these ones are the best out there (that I can remember)
- Where is my mind?, Pixies (Fight club) - Tiny Dancer, Elton John (Almost Famous) - Paranoid, Black Sabbath (Kong: Skull Island) - There is a light that never goes out, The smiths ((500) days of summer) - Come and Get Your Love, Redbone (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1) - Be my baby, The Ronettes (Barbarian) - Moonage Daydream, David Bowie (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1) - Unchained Melody, The righteous brothers (Ghost) - Sunshine of your love, Cream (Godfellas)

I hope you have time to check out the LEC Art Auction this week, featuring incredible art made by Trent students! With art on my mind, this week I’m recommending a book with art at the center. This one has been a long time favourite of mine!
Recommendation: Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia! Comics! Fan culture! Anxiety representation! Following teenager Eliza as she writes and draws a popular online comic and faces her anxiety! | Have a great week LEC and remember to stop by the Pit to see some amazing art!
