Principal’s Notes

We have so much going on at LEC right now! Keep reading to learn all about our Art Auction, Photo Contest, Winter College Weekend and Curry Cookoff. This week I want to take a moment to highlight some visiting speakers who will join us on campus in the coming weeks. The first to share is the annual Morton Lecture which will happen on on Feb. 1, 2024, 4:00 pm Nozhem Theatre, Enwayaang Building. Named in honour of W.L. Morton, the Canadian historian and former Master of Trent's Champlain College, this prestigious lecture invites a leading Canadian scholar to campus to provide a talk.

Register for the Morton Lecture

Next I want to share that the Trent U. Library and Archives and the First Peoples House of Learning (FPHL) are excited to invite you to an upcoming talk featuring Indigenous human rights advocate Jeannette Corbiere Lavell in conversation with her daughter, Dr. Dawn Memee Lavell-Harvard (director of the FPHL). They will talk about their work advocating for the legal status rights of Indigenous women in the Indian act, as well as their efforts, research, and writing toward protecting the equality of Indigenous women and children.

Hello Good Humans of Lady Eaton!

It has been a busy and happening week in your College Office! We have been taking in your art submissions and making big plans for the Annual Lady Eaton Art Auction that starts Tuesday from 12-8pm and opens daily through this week into your LEC Winter College Weekend! Please treat yourself and come for a gander through the LEC Pit transformed into a beautiful art gallery! The art this year has been INCREDIBLE! I am not sure how I will afford buying all the things but I will sure enjoy the bidding! This year we have moved the Auction to Hybrid, as well! This means we are hoping that you will check it out in person or online and then share the link to the people who you KNOW would just LOVE the art you find in the LEC Art Gallery! Or to those in your life who just love art and who want to support students on their academic journeys while the cost of food is so high! Please do spread the word as wide as you are comfortable with- teamwork makes the dreamwork!

Please also consider checking out the super fun and fabulous events your LEC Cabinet has been hard at work planning for your Winter College Weekend! There is a snow person making contest, reframe film festival screenings on our very beautiful new TV in the LEC Pit!, snowshoeing adventures, board games and pool tournaments as well as a mocktail night! So much fun! Please check it out and plan to join in the LEC fun.

Stop into the Art Gallery and say hello! Come by the office and grab a sticker!

Where ever you find your joy this week, I am cheering you on!

Academic Skills Tips for Getting Started & Staying on Task

Hi LEC! It's Natalie, your friendly Academic Skills instructor. I hope you are settling into the term and finding your groove. Would you like to make a time management plan? Are you curious about procrastination and how to stay motivated? Do you have assignment instructions that you want to talk through? You can book an appointment at www.trentu.ca/sep, visit our website at www.trentu.ca/academicskills, and drop in to a weekly Learning Lab to pick up some tips and tricks! Speaking of tips, here are a few you can try to help you get started on your to-do list!

Quick Tips for Getting Started and Staying Focused on Tasks

  • Break tasks down into small steps and make a list

    • Big assignments are overwhelming; break it down into small steps and work on one step at a time.

  • Be realistic (& honest!)

    • When are you most productive during the day? Do you work best on your own or in a public space? What can you realistically accomplish each day?

  • Start with something small and easy

    • Crossing an easy win off the list lights up our motivation. Try writing the title page, make a list of key search words for your research, or write out a to-do list!

  • Incentivize yourself

    • What can you reward yourself with for staying focused?

  • Set up your space

    • What do you need to be productive and focused? Music/sound? Try listening to brown noise to help with focus!

  • Eliminate distractions

    • Do your best to block anything that can interrupt your focus. If you're like me, your phone is a big distraction - try turning it off, keeping it in your bag, or timing your phone break before getting back to work.

  • Find an accountability buddy

    • Work alongside someone, share your work plan with a friend, or ask someone to check-in on your progress.

Toad-ally Top Three

Hello friends!

I’m happy to report that we are already a quarter way through the term! I think this is the perfect time to establish some good habits and figure out what works best for us, before we get into midterms and big assignments *shivers*. Sooo… it’s a great time to find your ideal study spot! I know from personal experience as a student in residence that it’s nice to just get off campus sometimes, and as an off-campus student, getting to Trent can be a real pain (I’m looking at you Peterborough Transit). All that to say, this week I have compiled the top three off-campus study spots!

  1. Black Honey Bakery- This is such a cute spot downtown with lots of yummy treats to reward yourself ! (Come into the College Office to find out how LEC students can get a discount!)

  2. Peterborough Public Library- This is a nice quiet spot if you want to really focus with minimal distractions. This spot has computers, printers, *and* private study rooms available to book.

  3. Fleming College A-Wing- I did some reconnaissance work for this one because those who live in South Peterborough deserve easy access to study spots too! This spot is open with lots of windows and I’m told its usually just busy enough to feel lively, if that’s your study vibe.

See you later alligators,

Musings on Music

If Guardians of the Galaxy knows how to do something, that is needle drops. Star lord and his funky walk are engraved in my brain, and perhaps I also do a funky walk whenever I listen to “Come and Get Your Love” on the street. Needle drops are not only good because the song itself is good, but because it gives a deeper emotion to the scene, or maybe it just makes it more enjoyable. Either way, needle drops are amazing, and these ones are the best out there (that I can remember)

- Where is my mind?, Pixies (Fight club)

- Tiny Dancer, Elton John (Almost Famous)

- Paranoid, Black Sabbath (Kong: Skull Island)

- There is a light that never goes out, The smiths ((500) days of summer)

- Come and Get Your Love, Redbone (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1)

- Be my baby, The Ronettes (Barbarian)

- Moonage Daydream, David Bowie (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1)

- Unchained Melody, The righteous brothers (Ghost)

- Sunshine of your love, Cream (Godfellas)

Let it rip,

AQ
