Forward to Friend Forward to Friend

Dear friends,

St. Andrew’s held the church’s Annual Meeting after the 10:00 service on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

As our first order of business, we elected Jean Howard, Chuck Jackson, and Steve Ragsdale to 3-year terms on the vestry.  Additionally, we elected Ben Lowe and Michael Hoagland as delegates to convention. Brian McDonnall and Chuck Jackson will be their alternates should they be unable to attend a convocation or convention.

Steve Ragsdale, the Junior Warden,  talked about all of the work that has been done in 2023 and that we are planning for 2024. Next on the boards are handrails for both of the western doors from Frazell Hall and a new gate from the back parking area. We await a survey and then permits.

Christie Scalera, the Senior Warden, reported on all of the events that took place last year. Among the new events were a Murder Mystery dinner theater and LWIN’s Sukkot dinner. She noted the wonderful work being done by the Care Committee and the Way Café.

Chris Diserio, the Treasurer,  shared the results of last year’s financial activities. We finished the year with a deficit of over $57,000 which was well below what we had anticipated. We are very grateful to those who made special end of the year contributions. We were able to cut our deficit by over $80,000. This year we anticipate a deficit of $124,500.

We then heard from our many ministries and shared in the joy of meals served, online services, communications improvements, and even linens ironed. There is a lot going on!

My remarks included the importance of invitation to bring people into our church and into the community of faith here. When I was in the Keys for the Florida Keys Celtic Festival, I had decided that I could not make the Sunday worship because of logistical challenges regarding one car and needing to check out of the hotel. But then my friend The Rev. Debra McConaughey asked me to come. So I did. Not because I’m a priest, but because I was invited! Invite your friends to church!

I also reminded the gathering that before I arrived the church engaged in completing the Congregational Assessment Tool (CAT) and in that there were two areas identified as really needing work. First there was Bible Study. Second was Stewardship. We’ve made some headway with Bible Study, but Stewardship is still on our plate of things to attend to. We have committed to working diligently on Stewardship this year, not as a one-year project, but as a start towards a new relationship with money and our spiritual need to give.

We concluded by praying for all of those who have died in the past year remembering Susan Hoerber, Ginny Foot, Elaine Campbell, Kenneth Sawyer, Kathy Barnette, Roy Bartolomei, Carol Sink’s mother Gladys, and Henrietta Pemberton’s son Rupert.

We said a blessing and went home, full of food – thanks for that – and information. But also full of hope and determination.

I look forward to being a part of St. Andrew’s long story in 2024 and beyond. God is doing important things here and we are here to change lives!

Blessings,

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church
1914 ~ 2024

After one-hundred and ten years, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church is what it is today because of countless individuals who dedicated themselves through faith, word and deed to the principals, beliefs and mission of the Episcopal Church. We will be forever grateful to every person has played a role in establishing and sustaining our house and family of worship.

We began with Mrs. Ada Cook and her three children who walked 14 miles round-trip to attend Episcopal services in West Palm Beach. Their determined act brought the need for an Episcopal presence in Lake Worth to the attention of Rev. Gilbert Ottmann, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church's rector. Rev. Ottmann, our guiding hand, held the first corporate worship of the Church of Saint Andrew on January 25, 1914 and continued to lead the mission's services twice a month for two years.

We are indebted to the fifteen original members of St. Andrew's who, in the summer of 1914 gave of their time, money, talent and physical brawn to "build the first real church building to be erected by a religious body in Lake Worth" (Lake Worth Herald).

We are equally beholden to the members, as well as Christians all over the country, who donated from their own pockets to rebuild the church after its destruction during the hurricane of 1928. Stalwart Maurice Stainthorpe even gave his family's dining room table top to make a new alter (now the chapel altar).

The steadfastness of people like Bess Waggener, the Sunday School teacher who taught her classes while sitting atop the collapsed roof of the 1914 church, ensured that St. Andrew's would rise from the ruins to continue its mission in Lake Worth. (Complete history can be found in the pages of “Fishers of Men” by Deacon Richard Long, and it’s 2014 addendum compiled by Gene Smalling.)

And 110 years later we are doing just that! Acting together as Jesus’ disciples, today’s members, friends and clergy continue the diligent work of ensuring that God’s love will be shared by all, now and in future generations.

On February 9th, St. Andrew’s will welcome back its favorite youth orchestra, the Camerata di Magdalena. These talented youngsters perform concerts to raise funds for homeless feeding programs. We’d like to give them a nice post-concert reception. Any donations or cookies, brownies, etc. would be very appreciated.

Thank you!

                         Valentines Pancake Supper

Traditionally during Lent, Christians would give up rich, tasty foods such as butter, eggs, sugar and fat, as some continue to do so today.  Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, was the last chance to eat such goodies - and what better way to do so than with a delicious pancake?!

The Vestry invites you to join us for our annual pancake supper Tuesday, February 13th at 6:00 pm in Frazell Hall.  We’re going to step it up a notch since we’ll also be celebrating Valentine’s Day, so come treat yourself/your honey to a festive evening with champagne, games, music and heart-shaped pancakes (maybe)!  Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 12 and under, and will be on sale during coffee hour after our services or from the office during the hours of 9am-4pm M, Tu or Thur; 9am-1pm W or F.  We do prefer pre-sales, but tickets will also be available the evening of the supper.

The Way Cafe & St. Andrew's

Way Cafe continues to serve the homeless and hungry in our community and we are serving them once a week now.  The 1st and 3rd Tuesdays are still a sit down hot meal.  Every other Tuesday of the month we distribute brown bag lunches and a drink.  We pass out 40-60 lunches each week.

Way Cafe also has "Casseroles to Go" in the Way Cafe freezer.  If you need one or want to give one to a friend or neighbor or a caretaker that could use a break, just take what you need.  You do not need permission and they are available whenever the office or Church are open.

We are always accepting donations for the Outside Food Pantry.  You can put them in the box yourself or leave them in the back of the Church in the wicker basket.

We appreciate all of the support from within and outside of our Church Family!

Sharing Christ’s Love

The Daughter’s Rule of Life is Prayer, Service and Evangelism. While prayer and service are easily defined and recognized we often wonder “what is evangelism?”

Evangelism comes from a Greek word meaning “to preach the good news”. Daughters recognize that our faith is not a private faith hidden in our hearts. Our faith is to be loving and joyous and inclusionary to all. How do we attempt to reach those may not yet know the love of Jesus? Through a combination of prayer, service, and evangelism we try to show Christ to others.

Visiting the sick or lonely and praying with them, often bringing a blessed prayer shawl, blanket, or quilt. While serving the homeless at Way Cafe and distributing hygiene bags, we often are asked to pray with and for them, and when asked we give them donated bibles.

Sometimes we bring food to shut-ins, sit with the sick, or just be with those who have lost a loved one. Welcoming visitors to church and pray for those requesting prayer after the service.

We are group of women different in so many ways yet one with our love for the Lord, and our desire to share that love with others. We are grateful for the loving support of the church
(all of you) on our mission to spread God’s love.

The Prayer for Evangelism

O Lord, lead us, teach us, and help us to make a constant effort in our own lives to present Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit in such ways that other persons may be led to believe in Him as Savior and follow Him as Lord. Amen

FROM THE OFFICE...

The "I Don't Know Prayer"

Just go off somewhere quiet and hidden and walk right up to the heart of God and say: "I don't know."

I don't know where to go from here. I don't know what is happening. I don't know how to process this. I don't know what to do with these emotions. I don't know how to handle this situation.

It covers a lot of "I don't knows."

And then, with whatever dusty little sand grains of faith you have, you say, "But You know."

And you leave it there.

God most certainly hears that prayer.
