Clearing the Trails

Austin Creek Trail Crew Report January 24, 2024:

A even dozen Volunteers joined up with Scotty and Riley at Bullfrog Pond Campground to remove hazards and work on fuel reduction. On the drive up several of the slides along Armstrong Woods Road seem to be moving. Many new cracks in the road and moving dirt. This was not a sun, sun shining day, however, rain or shine, we looked forward to a good time. Our Crew broke into several teams once we arrived at Bullfrog Pond. One team started burning piles of debris that the Weekend Warriors and Scotty had built. With the rain they were able to feed and keep them burning hotter and longer than normal. Another team started bucking up logs on the ground to be processed for firewood later. A third team accessed and dropped several hazard trees at Vista Point. Still a lot of hazards to be removed and some more fuel reduction needed. Lets not forget the rebuilding of the campground itself. Hopefully Armstrong Woods Road will make it through the winter storms. -- Rich Lawton CSP/SCR Volunteer Trail Crew Coordinator

Recording your hours and Bear in Mind Training while being an employee or volunteer
Recording volunteer hours and completing Bear in Mind training: Volunteers can reach out to Amelia Schall (amelia.schall@parks.ca.gov) directly to report their volunteer time, and for help in accessing the Bear in Mind training.

Bear in Mind Training: As a California State Park volunteer, you represent the park whenever you are serving.  Because of this, it is important that you are aware of the standards to which you should expect to be treated as well as the expectations of how you are to treat others while you are serving.  To aid in this, all long-term California State Park volunteers over 18 are now required to take the department’s Bear in Mind, Equal Opportunity Employment (EEO) training every two years.

There are three ways to complete this training. This five minute video shows how to do it on the Better Impact database: Accessing Bear in Mind Training for Volunteers in Better Impact - YouTube. Other options are reading through a pdf or printed copy of the workbook and submitting the completed quiz to me.

There is also this video created by HQ that shows how to log hours: How to Log Hours - YouTube
