MESSAGE FROM THE CO-DIRECTOR

Dear CSCC Community,
As we step into the first month of 2024, named after the god of beginnings, Janus, we find ourselves at an interesting juncture. January symbolizes the dual faces of reflection and anticipation, with one side turned toward the past and the other toward the future.
It is customary during this time to set resolutions—a radical departure from aspects we wish to change in our lives or work. However, research shows that a significant number of resolutions are abandoned within weeks.
Here, I’d like to propose a different approach. Instead of making radical resolutions, I advocate for something more enduring:
Follow through
Commitment
Consistency
Persistence*
These principles go beyond idealistic goals. It is about making promises and, more importantly, keeping them. It is about putting ideas out into the world and engaging with feedback. It is a journey of trials and errors but with determination intact. It is a process of continuous improvement driven by genuine care.
What do you care about the most in your teaching, your scholarship, and your service? In 2024, how can you follow through on that one research proposal, turning it into a manuscript and sharing it with the academic community? Or that one teaching philosophy, turning it into sparks in your students’ eyes, igniting a thirst for learning? Or perhaps that one change you want to make in our institutional community, turning it into real actions and real impact?
May your 2024 be filled with “Follow through, Commitment, Consistency, Persistence”—purpose and progress.
Warm regards,
Baozhen Luo-Hermanson

CSCC COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

|
交集|学普通话等于学中国话吗?
CSCC invites you to read an article written in Chinese by Lorenzo Maggio Laquidara, Class of 2024, for Intersections. Intersections: A Journal of Language, Culture, and Ideas is an online magazine featuring writing in Chinese and English by members of the Duke Kunshan community. With support from LCC, CSCC, and the UG Program, Intersections seeks to create a space where that dialogue can unfold in written form, at greater length, and with more nuance than it can in the cafeteria, hallway, or dorm room. In keeping with DKU's language-learning spirit, as much as possible articles will be written in the author's second language: primarily learners of English as a second language writing in English, and learners of Chinese as a second language writing in Chinese.
