We had a great time listening to baker & theologian Kendall Vanderslice who talked about the many joyful, occasionally awkward but always restorative connections between the communion table and the dinner table. God wants to heal restore communities through eating! In a lonely, polarized world, the church potluck might just be our mightiest spiritual practice. We also gathered to hear a sobering talk on The Lost Art of Dying given by Dr. Lydia Dugdale. The complexities of how some of us want to hasten our dying and some of us work to keep it away as long as possible were presented in light of the church’s history of facing mortality and letting the treasures of faith prepare us for a good death. In light of medical assistance in dying in Canada and the gifts of faith in light of mortality, this lecture has encouraged us at 1Life to take up this topic again in the future.
