Red Carpet reflections vs taking style into your own hands
I didn't watch the Emmy's, but of course I looked at what the actors wore for their moment in the limelight. Eh. Too many of the outfits made me groan, "Oh, honey, fire your stylist. That outfit does NOT suit you." Like these two in black:

On the left, where to begin? See-thru "schoolgirl" blouse with high Peter Pan collar on a 50-year-old woman? Our eyes instinctively notice contrast and leading lines--pointing where? Why? The actor on the right is so soft and pale, the severe black is overpowering.

Taylor Swift, a Spring, could probably pull off either of these outfits. But neither actor below is a Spring. The gal on the left has the elegant facial structure and bearing of a Winter and should never wear a cutesy busy Raggedy-Anne dress. The gal on the right loses dignity in a fluffy pink tutu, a color that does nothing for her gorgeous skin.

Lest you think I'm all negative, here's three I LOVED!

At home, you deserve to live in color you love
Before I focused on personal color palettes, I spent a lot of time advising clients on color palettes for their homes. It made me so sad when someone wanted more interesting colors on their walls but stuck with staid, because they planned to sell the home in a few years or because the landlord would make them repaint to white, and they didn't want to forfeit the deposit.

I say life's too short to worry about future buyers or losing your deposit. Watch and listen to this Instagram artist express herself in color, design and song. I love the sheer delight of her creativity and attitude. She's right, the landlord should pay HER.

PS: I still do palettes for the home on occasion for the fun of it.

Put yourself in the way of beauty
Sometimes, when it's cold, dark and dreary you have to make an effort to find special beauty. Last week my best friend and I had an "artist's date": two local museums and a delicious lunch. The Portland Art Museum is in the middle of a big expansion, but it's still worth visiting for the exhibit of African fashion. Colorful, bold, and fun. (I looked down at my gray outfit and had thoughts.)

We also went to the Jewish Museum to see the amazing drawings of Leonard Baskin (closes 1/28!) and then were overwhelmed by their exhibition on human rights issues around the world since WWII. In our quest for power, wealth and dominance, human beings have done some pretty horrific things. The exhibit is sobering but highly recommended. We do NOT need another authoritarian regime--it NEVER turns out well.
