Ocean Discovery League Newsletter | January 2024

Last year, we launched the inaugural Ocean Exploration Day honoring the day in 1960 when Jacques Piccard and US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh reached a record depth of approximately 10,911 meters (35,797 ft) in the research bathyscaphe Trieste, fueling public interest in the deep ocean.

As we celebrate Ocean Exploration Day 2024, we look to the future of deep ocean exploration, which comes down to one word: acceleration. If the past year’s climate change news has revealed anything, we do not have time to explore the deep, slowly, and expensively. We need lower-cost solutions in the hands of more people in targeted deep-sea areas to characterize this critical biosphere before it’s too late.

The future path is clear. To fully characterize the deep sea over the next decade, we need:

  • Targeted Exploration: Identifying and exploring locations that, when observed and sampled, will allow us to characterize the deep ocean effectively.
  • Lower Cost and Easier to Use Tools:  Developing low-cost, high-quality tools, deployment systems, and data analysis solutions. We also need the deep-sea community to accept that low-cost solutions do not produce low-cost data and that any observations are better than none. The sooner the community adopts this approach, the faster we can complete this work.
  • A Broader Community of Explorers: Deep ocean exploration can no longer be limited to the select few with the means and methods to conduct this research. 76% of countries in the world have deep ocean in their EEZ, and they need the tools to explore them before making decisions that will destroy this landscape irreparably.

Sadly, we lost Don Walsh last November at the age of 92. We are so grateful that he joined us for Ocean Exploration Day last year to share his thoughts on ocean exploration, and we will forever remember his guidance and wisdom.

We invite you to post and share about Ocean Exploration Day 2024 using our social media toolkit. We look forward to sharing the incredible progress this community has made during OED next year!

Celebrate Ocean Exploration Day Today!

This Ocean Exploration Day, while celebrating the importance of ocean exploration and the history of those who dived into the unknown, we must look to the future and how we wish to contribute to the sector. The future of ocean exploration hinges on recognizing and valuing the contributions of all who call the oceans their home. Broadening the community of those who explore the ocean is critical to fostering global deep-ocean stewardship and protection of this critical resource worldwide. We encourage you to use our social media toolkit to spread the word today!
Katy Croff Bell contributed an essay, "Accessing the Deep," to the book The Future of Exploration, available now from Amazon and local booksellers. Read her blog post about her essay here, and get a copy of the book to hear what 35 other explorers have to say about the greatest discoveries yet to be made. All proceeds support future exploration!
