 Construction Update

The roof is going up! The construction team recently completed the roof structure and installed roofing membrane over the northwest and northeast wings. This is an important milestone in weather-proofing the building and readying the space for temporary heat and interior work. Mechanical and electrical rough-in work is now underway along with window installation in these areas.

Completing the roof over the remainder of the building is a priority for the construction team over the coming weeks. The team is highly motivated to create a fully weather-proof workspace and continue to make progress indoors during
the cold season.

You can watch the drone footage of the site which shows the progress of construction from January 2024.

 Staffing & Training

We are now turning our focus to recruitment. The Family Preservation Wellness Centre is committed to supporting Yukon First Nations women to build capacity to fill all positions at the Centre. In the next few months we will be offering information sessions to answer questions about the recruitment process, and to provide information on the upcoming positions at the Centre.

Watch for future postings and updates for upcoming events!

 Site Visit

We continue to ensure knowledge keepers and Elders visit with the site crew. On January 16th Gwitchin Elder Annie Bernard visited the site. Annie spoke about life, health, and the importance of the work the crew was doing. Laughs were shared as she told stories of her experiences and the significance of speaking words of love and affirmation to ourselves while reminding the crew they were deserving of respect and dignity.

Site visits are essential to ensure traditional teachings and knowledge is shared with the crew, helping to establish and strengthen the connection and the importance of the Centre.

 Site Crew Spotlight!

Meet Christian Gladue! Christian is from Dawson Creek and a member of Champagne & Aishihik First Nations. He is currently a 3rd year apprentice, registered for his final year of schooling, and has been with Walker Home Construction for almost 7 years.

“I was running the prefab shop for awhile but currently I am doing plan drafting for the company which is a skill I am currently being taught and will be formally trained on. I had never touched a tool before starting with Walker Home Construction. The only thing I knew was how to read a tape. Over the years Les has taught me to be a competent carpenter, a team leader, and I have acquired a lot of other skills such as the Standard First Aid, running equipment (skid steer, forklift) and I’m currently registered for a crane course to get my crane license.

In summary, working for Walker Home Construction has been by far one of the best experiences of my life. The skills I have learned will help me for the rest of my life, as well as acquiring a job I’m happy to spend the rest of my career working for.”

- Christian Gladue

Thank you Christian for your commitment and your hard work.

Thank you!
