FROM THE COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR
We Hope to Hear from YOU!
By John McNeill | ICOYC Communications
This year, beyond most, should be full of interesting news as we look forward to the usual wealth of regattas, plus the 37th America’s Cup and the Paris Olympics. Of course, the major media and your clubs’ publications will write about the obvious parts. What I hope we will be able to share with our ICOYC network are the tales unique to leading yacht clubs that go deeper and in some ways are closer to our own experiences as the year progresses. One good example in this Currents issue is from my own club, St. Francis Yacht Club, and describes how we encourage members to participate in racing activity, even if not on the water. A similar report from Societe Nautique de Marseilles some years ago related a beautiful system for celebrating and awarding volunteers. Then there was one last year about the young sailor who had developed excellent skills as a coach and hoped to share them while traveling. These are the tales that go beyond the obvious—and they exist at EVERY club in the ICOYC.

Most of the articles in the Currents come to us through the network of ICOYC Club Correspondents and their regional leads who accepted the role of speaking for your club each month. Even that great crew, though, does not hear of many of the unusual tales to be told. We need to hear from you, either directly or through your correspondent, of those fascinating tales or new ideas quietly taking place in your club.

For example, do you have members going to the Olympics in Paris, or joining a team at Barcelona for the America’s Cup? Is there a new club race designed to provide a good mix of fun and competition? My favorite race to watch here in San Francisco is StFYC’s Opti Heavy Weather Regatta. Nothing is more exciting than watching kids with tiller and mainsheet in one hand and bailer in the other!

What are you doing to promote more member participation in events? Has there been a recent member survey with surprising results? We all learn by sharing at all levels and your communications are as important as any. Please share with us throughout the year.

Why Are You Watching Races from Shore?
It is no secret amongst St. Francis Yacht Club members that yacht racing is in the Club’s DNA. Around 130 days a year there is top-level racing on its world-class venue, often including sailors from around the world. There is no question that StFYC’s racing program is among the world’s best. The real question is why aren’t more members getting involved with Race Committee?
